Holding more than five constitutes an offense. Similarly, if a summer coarse cloth garment becomes torn and one gathers too many and seeks more, it is also an offense, it is said. If there appear to be many actions related to the vow to dwell in summer, are those actions related to the earlier vow to dwell in summer also related to the later vow to dwell in summer? Therefore, it is said, "Following it is just like the vow." "Following it" means following the vow, being related to the vow, and whatever actions arise in dependence on the vow. "Just like the vow" means that all of that should be understood as being in accordance with the vow. This is what is taught: If a monk makes a vow to dwell in summer earlier, then all the actions that are related to the earlier vow to dwell in summer should be done in that way. However, if a monk makes a vow to dwell in summer later, then all the actions that are related to the later vow to dwell in summer should be done in that way. For example, the statement "taking a garment that arises from reliance on the last ten days" refers to whatever one's own last ten days of summer are, such as the ten days from the fifth to the fifteenth of the middle autumn month, or the ten days from the fifth to the fifteenth of the small autumn month. Thus, one should understand the seeking and holding of summer coarse cloth in relation to the duration of the summer to be dwelt in. Similarly, confession is like the fifteenth of the middle autumn month or the fifteenth of the small autumn month. A firm spread is only related to the very first vow to dwell in summer. The abandonment of summer coarse cloth has been explained. If it is asked, what is the meaning of abandonment that arises from reliance on offerings, who is the agent? Therefore, it is said, "The gains of summer are the agent himself." Here, the gains of summer refer to whatever gains are obtained for the sake of dwelling in summer, and that is the agent of the downfall, not other gains obtained for the sake of temporary offerings and so forth.
