The first day of the sun is the sixteenth of the first summer month or the sixteenth of the middle summer month. "Until then" means taking those two first days as the beginning and until then. "One should seek the great cloth of summer" means that a monk should seek the great cloth of summer clothing, which is its synonym. This is what is indicated here: If a monk is to seek the great cloth of summer clothing, then when he promises to abide in the early summer, from the sixteenth of the first summer month, until the end of the time when that monk is allowed to hold the great cloth of summer clothing, he should seek the great cloth of summer. If he promises to abide in the late summer, then from the sixteenth of the middle summer month, until the end of the time when that monk is allowed to hold the great cloth of summer clothing, he should seek the great cloth of summer. This sutra indicates the time for initially seeking the great cloth of summer. Now, wanting to speak of the time of holding, it is said, "One should hold it until the end of the half-month after one's own summer." Because that monk has promised to abide in summer, whichever is designated as early or late summer, the half-month that comes after it, which is the later half-month, is the half-month after one's own summer. Its end is the ultimate, and until that time, one should hold the great cloth of summer clothing. This is what is indicated here: If that monk wants to promise to abide in the early summer, then from the sixteenth of the first summer month until the first day of the last autumn month, there are five and a half months for holding that great cloth of summer clothing. If that monk wants to promise to abide in the late summer, then from the sixteenth of the middle summer month until the first day of the first winter month, there are five and a half months for holding that great cloth of summer clothing, and it is not allowed to hold it beyond that time. Therefore, here, on the first day of the last autumn month, or when the first dawn of the first winter month rises, it will become an act of abandonment and downfall. That is how it is.

Here I ask, if a monk holds an unsuitable summer large cloth for more than five and a half months of winter, what offense is committed? Does the attendant commit a minor offense? This is what was said. When is the summer large cloth abandoned? Therefore, it is said, "The two times before and after, the two times that are not so, are the doer himself." It means that the time before the indicated time of searching, and the time after the indicated time of holding, these two times are the doer of the transgression here. This is indicated by saying: The time from the fifteenth day of the first month of summer to the fifteenth day of the second month of summer, and the time from the fifteenth day of the second month of autumn to the first day of the third month of autumn, these two times are the doer of the transgression. In what place are these two the doer? Therefore, it is said, "Temporarily holding, is holding elsewhere." It means that holding at a time other than the time of holding previously indicated is the doer of the fundamental offense. "Previously searching, is a minor offense." It means that searching at a time earlier than the time of searching previously indicated, merely the act of searching, is the doer of a minor offense. In what place is the doer of the fundamental offense? Therefore, it is said, "If completed, it is the boundary." It means that if the summer large cloth is completed at a time earlier than the time of searching indicated, then the earlier time is the boundary, and is the doer of the fundamental offense. What is it that begins to search at an earlier time and obtains it at the appropriate time? That is a transgression of action, but not a fundamental offense. "For the old, it is reproach." It means that the old summer large cloth, which has become worn and needs repair, searching for it at a time that is not the time of searching, and obtaining it, and holding it beyond the time, that is reproach, and a minor offense is committed. This is the summary. Here I ask, the old summer large cloth, which has been damaged for half a month
