A monk should not interfere in the affairs of merchants. The monk should not participate in them, nor should he obstruct them. If one needs to buy one's own robes and other items, what should one do? Therefore, it is said that a householder should be asked to buy them. Robes and other items should be bought by a householder. If there is no householder, what should one do then? Therefore, it is said that if there is none, one should say it three times. If there is no householder, then the monk should determine the value of his own item and ask three times, saying, "Please sell it for this price." This should be said three times, and that is the conclusion. One should not raise the price of goods for the sake of others, except for the Three Jewels. The term "goods" refers to cardamom, varataka, and so on. The term "raising the price" refers to slightly increasing the price when buying and slightly decreasing the price when selling. This is what is called raising the price of goods. Therefore, since it should not be done for the sake of others, how much less should it be done for oneself? In this way, after a general explanation, in order to show the specificity, it is said, "except for the Three Jewels." This means that for the sake of the Three Jewels, one may raise the price of goods, and that is the conclusion. One should not pawn. The term "pawn" refers to saying, "If it is not like that, I will give you five karshapanas." If one loses at gambling and cannot repay, one pawns items such as hats. One should not make such a pawn. Here, the Vinaya text says that the Six Groups of monks, after losing at gambling, pawned their bowls and other items. The Blessed One therefore taught: A monk should not gamble and pawn. If a monk gambles and pawns, he will commit a serious offense. If it is said that one should make offerings to the Sangha, how should one make offerings? Who should make the subsequent offerings? Therefore, it is said that when the Sangha accumulates those items, it should entrust the work to the Sangha's steward. This means that when the Sangha buys ghee and other items,

The gains of the Sangha should be accomplished through practices such as these, and this matter should be entrusted to a diligent and striving monk, a 'Spogpa' (སྤོགས་པ།, Accumulator), and he should exert effort. If asked: Should the Sangha entrust its own wealth and so forth to the 'Spogpa'? It is not so. Therefore, it is said that it should be entrusted to the manager of the Sangha's affairs. The so-called manager of the Sangha's affairs refers to those who handle matters such as signing contracts. Here, it is taught: Once the Sangha becomes the owner, it should instruct the manager of the Sangha's affairs, saying, 'Please give the wealth and so forth to this monk 'Spogpa'.' Those who sign contracts and so forth should give the wealth and so forth to that monk 'Spogpa', and that monk 'Spogpa' should righteously and lawfully accomplish the gains of the Sangha. From here onwards, the actions of that monk 'Spogpa' will be described. The statement 'Without consulting the elders, do not strive for the benefit of the Sangha' means that the monk 'Spogpa' should not strive for the benefit of the Sangha without consulting the elders. The statement 'Be diligent in writing down the contract' means that the monk 'Spogpa' should be diligent in writing down the contract regarding the receipt of wealth and so forth and the return of wealth and so forth. Here, it is taught: When that monk 'Spogpa' receives wealth and so forth from the manager of the Sangha's affairs, he should immediately write it down, such as at such and such a time, the Sangha and such and such a manager of the Sangha's affairs and such and such an attendant entrusted this much wealth to me, and I, at such and such a time, used this wealth to purchase such and such an item for such and such a price, and then at such and such a time, I sold that item for such and such a price, and from that, I gained this much profit, and then at that time, I used that profit for such and such an affair of the Sangha, and so forth. The monk should be diligent in writing down these contracts. All of these are to avoid the slander of others, to be able to remember oneself, and to avoid generating regret. The abandonment of buying and selling has been explained. Now, the abandonment of carrying the alms bowl will be described.
