When the value is obtained, it should be accepted, and after accepting it, one should trust the donor and hold it. I allow this, which is the first allowance. Similarly, monks, as long as you live, all unsuitable objects, no matter how small, should be made pleasing to the donor and disposed of in his name, which is the second allowance. The third allowance should be understood as blessing. Just as in the Sutra Requested by the Brahmin's Daughter, when monks obtain the value of Dharma robes but there is no donor, the monks feel regret. In the case of not accepting, the monks prayed to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: You should accept it, and after accepting it, stand in front of the monk and say: Venerable, please listen. I, a monk named so-and-so, have obtained this unsuitable object. I, a monk named so-and-so, bless this unsuitable object. Through this unsuitable object, I will accomplish a suitable object. Say this two or three times, and do not regret it. Therefore, for something that has been made suitable from being unsuitable, even if touched or allowed to be touched, there is no downfall. One should not claim ownership of it oneself; therefore, one should trust the donor and hold it. For something that one claims ownership of, one should not touch it oneself, nor should one allow others to touch it, because all three allowances will not occur. In this way, because it is related to ownership, it becomes an allowance. Therefore, even in the blessing mantra, it is said: I will use this unsuitable object to accomplish a suitable object. Suitable objects can be owned, but unsuitable objects cannot. Because of saying allowance, touching will not lead to downfall. The Blessed One did not teach the three types of allowance for the property of others; therefore, touching or allowing others to touch it will lead to downfall.

It only changes in this way. Thus, the meaning of the words here arises: If, in order to abandon what one possesses, one makes it lawful through any of the three lawful means, then, for things that are not lawful, if one touches or causes to be touched because of need, it will not constitute a downfall. If, even while doing the three lawful means, one still possesses the item and is associated with it, then in all cases it will constitute a downfall. Regarding "not relying on anything other than the cause of possessing things related to the Dharma," "related to the Dharma" means not separate from the Dharma, that is, one's own bowl, Dharma robes, medicine, and other utensils. These are both related to the Dharma and are things, so they are "things related to the Dharma." It is both a thing related to the Dharma and not possessed, so it is "not possessing things related to the Dharma." "Its cause" refers to what substance accomplishes it, that is, how much substance will accomplish the thing related to the Dharma. Those lawful things depend on that substance. "Other than that cause" refers to possessing things related to the Dharma. For other substances that are not needed as its cause, those blessings do not depend on it. Therefore, it is said, "It does not depend on anything other than the cause of not possessing things related to the Dharma." This is how it is taught: Is it only possessing things related to the Dharma? Or, for things related to the Dharma, such as the bowl and Dharma robes, what is the substance that is the cause of them, and one also possesses it, and if one blesses it not as the cause of the Dharma's things, then those lawful things will not depend on it. Therefore, for anything other than the cause of things related to the Dharma, even if the three lawful means have been done, if that monk touches it or causes it to be touched, it will constitute a relinquishment downfall. It should be known that the quote mentioning "cause" is this: When one obtains the value of Dharma robes, one should trust the benefactor and hold it. Considering for the sake of Dharma robes and so on is the value of Dharma robes and so on; they make one consider Dharma robes and so on, which is a synonym for "accomplishment." I
