This is important. Like this, for those who are harmed by the cold in remote areas, the use of cushions is permitted. The giving of a spread is because it covers the mattress and is for complete protection. Therefore, it should be understood that spreads and cushions are different. The Pratimoksha also extensively mentions that a spread is a separate spread. The Sutra Pitaka also says that the spread is carried on the shoulder. Because it is inappropriate to carry cotton or woolen items on the shoulder when walking on the road, spreads and cushions are different. The size of the cushion should be understood to be similar to that of the spread, and if it reaches the ultimate size of covering the three wheels, it will become the root cause of downfall. If it is smaller than this size, a minor offense will be committed. Regarding the size of the cushion, it was spoken by the Blessed One himself. What are the possessions held by the monks? They are the three requisites of a lay follower, namely, a large cushion, a medium cushion, and a small cushion. Among them, the large cushion is five and a half cubits, the small cushion is three and a half cubits, and the medium cushion is in between the two. What action would cause it to become an object of abandonment made of silk and cotton? Therefore, it is said that if one makes or has someone make it with silk and cotton. Making with silk and cotton means making a cushion with silk and cotton that has internal spaces or is filled. "Made" means doing it oneself, and "had someone make it" means entrusting it to someone else. Therefore, it will become an object of abandonment made of silk and cotton. To explain the establishment of both the actions of making and having someone make it, it is said that on the cushion, the spreading itself is the ultimate beginning. It should be understood that when making a cushion, the spreading of all the necessary silk and cotton is the ultimate beginning. "Making" means making a cushion, and "ultimate making" means completion. The beginning of the ultimate making being completed is the spreading itself, and it should be understood that this refers to laying out the cotton wool of silk and cotton. This is how it is explained: doing this much will become the root cause. Whatever is done after that is included in it, because it has become a single, unified action. Here, some collated texts say, to what extent does the downfall become complete?

Furthermore, it is said, "Whatever is scattered up to this point." It is said that "there is no transgression for those who have already done, obtained, fully enjoyed, and manifestly created." That is to say, there is no transgression for those who have already done and obtained, those who fully enjoy what others have already done, and those who manifestly create old dusters. Like this, there is no fault in possessing and fully enjoying, because they consider that only the initial making and subsequent completion are faulty. The so-called "discrimination of silk cotton abandonment," that which arises from discrimination has already been explained. In order to collect what arises from the occasion of explanation, it is said, "The very act of mixing with a small amount is itself a degradation." That is to say, the very act of making a cushion by mixing a small amount of silk and white cotton, or Shana cotton cloth, or medicinal cotton, etc., is itself a degradation. If the price is high, it is itself a degradation, and it will become a misdeed. This is a concluding word. That is in regard to the scope of all cushions. Regarding "the very degradation of the material is also," the word "also" is used to follow "is itself a degradation." The so-called "very degradation of the material" is the very degradation of silk cotton. If one makes a cushion from that material, or mixes it with it, it is also a degradation, which is a misdeed. For cotton and so on, it should also be understood in the same way, because the establishment of transgression is similar. If the proportions of mixing are equal, a high price will be fully realized. For example, if one mixes silk cotton and black cotton in equal proportions and makes a cushion, it will only become abandonment. The so-called "explanation of silk cotton abandonment," that which arises from the occasion of explanation is complete. The so-called "silk cotton abandonment" has already been explained. The abandonment of black cotton alone should be stated. After acknowledging the aspect of silk cotton abandonment that has already been shown, another name for black cotton alone should be stated in the place of silk cotton. Therefore, it is said, "The black cotton of sheep alone." It is shown that if one makes a cushion from the black cotton of sheep alone, or has someone else make it, it will become abandonment. What makes it black cotton? Is it by nature? Or by changing color? Or both?
