The essence is inability; if one cannot understand what is said, then persuasion is meaningless. It is taught like this: If, due to causes such as being absent-minded, or falling asleep, or being drunk, or being in a hurry, or being deaf, or being ill, or being controlled by others, one cannot properly understand what is being expressed, then at that time, persuasion is meaningless. It is not only that persuasion is meaningless because one does not understand what is said, but also that if one cannot understand the words, faith, meaning, expressions, and any other actions related to it, then it can only be that nothing is done. The six doors of persuasion spoken by the Blessed One, if considered, are persuasion, but if not considered, they are not. For example, speaking directly, arranging well, and regarding food and drink, each is divided into two, so there are six in total. Among them, speaking directly is saying "Have you come?" and then answering "Yes." Or saying "Have you come well?" and then answering "Yes." Arranging well is saying "Sit on this mat," and then answering "Yes." Or saying "Wash your feet," and then answering "Yes." Regarding food and drink, it is saying "Eat something," and then answering "Yes." Or saying "Drink something," and then answering "Yes." All of these should be distinguished separately; if done in one way, then all six will become one door of persuasion, therefore they should be distinguished separately. If it is not successful the first time, then it is said, "It can also be twice," meaning that if the first persuasion is not successful, then one can also persuade twice. Saying "It can also be three times," means that if persuading twice is also not successful, then one can also persuade three times. After that, saying "In between three times, one should also sit in that direction," means that if one has not obtained the robe after persuading three times, then after that, that monk should, in between three times, sit in the direction where the almsgiver is, without speaking, only with symbolic objects. So, from the perspective of distinction, should one also sit silently in that direction for four, five, or six times?

It is said that one should stay. How is it said here that one should stay in the direction three times? From the distinction, it is said by the number of exhortations, one, two, or three, but it is not said only to stay in the direction. Here, it should be understood that wherever there is a famous place to stay, that is where one can stay. If it is not obtained, one should proclaim to the giver, which means that if the acquisition of clothes is not achieved and there is no hope in the ways shown above, then one should proclaim to the giver, saying, 'You have not given me anything, know this yourself.' After abandoning in this way, if someone makes an offering, having spoken of abandonment, one should accept from the acceptance of following and gathering the mind of giving, which means, 'In this way' means according to the order shown before. 'Having abandoned' means having given up. 'After' means after having completely abandoned in this way. 'If one offers' means if the proclaimer then offers clothes to that monk, then, 'if one offers,' the monk should accept the clothes from that person. What is the difference? Therefore, having spoken of abandonment, the monk says to the proclaimer, 'I have proclaimed to the giver, you have not given me anything, know this yourself,' having said such words, it is from the proclaimer to whom he said those words. Furthermore, following and gathering the mind of giving, the mind of giving is the mind of the donor. Following and gathering that mind is when the proclaimer follows and gathers the mind of giving, promising the monk, and the monk should accept the clothes from that person. It is shown thus: If the monk does not obtain clothes from the proclaimer in the ways shown above and has no hope, he proclaims to the giver, saying, 'You have not given me anything, know this yourself.'

After having declared the renunciation, if someone later urges and offers clothes to a monk, at that time, the monk should say to the one urging, "I have declared renunciation to the donor, do not give me anything, you know it yourself." Thus, it should be declared that the renunciation of clothes has already been stated. Even though the renunciation of clothes has been known, if that urging person says, "Venerable, please accept this cloth, I will gather the mind of the donor with this," if he promises to do so, then that monk should receive that cloth from that urging person. Having shown how to urge and other actions, now, in order to show what should be done before receiving that leads to renunciation, it is said, "Urging and gathering too much or not promising." "Urging too much" means urging more than three times. "Gathering too much" is also the same, meaning gathering more than three times. "Not promising" means not promising to do follow-up actions to gather the donor's mind when it has already been renounced. Among the six ways of urging that are mentioned, three are of the nature of words, and three are of the nature of staying on one side, and there is no order to these. If one stays on one side first and urges later, there is no fault in that. Similarly, if one urges twice and stays four times, there is no fault in that either, because the situation of staying is less serious. The opposite of this is not allowed. After showing the follow-up actions that belong to before receiving, now we will talk about the follow-up actions that belong to time, what actions will lead to renunciation? Therefore, it is said, "If accepted," this is a synonym for clothes. What kind of people are the giver, the messenger, and the one who urges? Therefore, it is said, "All three are human and householder identities," the giver, the messenger, and the one who urges, all three are human and householder identities. Thus it is shown that if the giver, the messenger, and the one who urges belong to the human realm.
