Secondly, "named as the second" refers to the third Saṃghāṭī, which is the second, referring to the Saṃghāṭī made of fifteen, seventeen, and nineteen pieces of cloth. These pieces of cloth are four and a half spans wide. "Named as the third, which is five and a half spans wide" refers to the third, which is the Saṃghāṭī made of twenty-one, twenty-three, and twenty-five pieces of cloth. These pieces of cloth are five and a half spans wide. Whatever pieces of cloth are five and a half spans wide are five and a half spans wide. Their substance is also the same. The upper robe is seven pieces of cloth, three and a half spans wide. The lower skirt is five pieces of cloth, two and a half spans wide. The dimensions of these two garments should be known from the mantra for blessing the Dharma garments. The Blessed One did not explicitly specify the dimensions of the upper and lower robes in terms of cloth pieces, as he did for the Saṃghāṭī. The Saṃghāṭī must be cut and sewn. The upper and lower robes do not necessarily need to be cut and sewn; they can be used as desired. If someone wants to cut and sew them, they can do so; if they do not want to cut them, they can also do so. As it is said in the *Mother Sutra, Questions of the Near Ones*: "The Blessed One said that the Saṃghāṭī must be cut and sewn, while the upper and lower robes are not necessarily so." The author of the *Vinaya, Summary of Words* also said: "The Saṃghāṭī must be cut and sewn, others are not necessary. In order to reduce attachment to one's own Dharma garments, thereby transforming the suffering of karma." So, what are their dimensions? Therefore, it is said: "The great robe that can be blessed is three cubits in length and five cubits in width." This means that the Saṃghāṭī, upper robe, and lower skirt, these great robes that can be blessed, all have the same dimensions, three cubits in length and five cubits in width. If the width of any of the three Dharma garments that can be blessed exceeds the three cubits previously mentioned, and the length exceeds the five cubits, then it should be discarded. Similarly, if someone thinks that many layers should be made, and considers various reasonable layering methods, if it exceeds these, it should also be discarded.

It should be discarded. There is no thought of making many layers, and if one wants to make more than one layer, it should also be discarded. Because there is the thought of cutting, if one makes more than the size of the three cut robes, there is nothing to be discarded. Because there is no thought of cutting, if one wants to make only uncut robes, if it exceeds the size of the uncut robes, it should also be discarded. As long as there is a slight thought of cloth on the garment, there will be no fault. At what time, if one merely possesses a garment and wants to make the Dharma robe small, but makes a large or medium Dharma robe to place, there is no fault. Like this, if one wants to make a Dharma robe and abides in the Dharma robe, then one should know that one abides in the size of all Dharma robes. If the width or length is excessive, there is no fault in thinking of cutting it off and sewing it together. The so-called "small size is to subtract half from both" refers to the small size of the Dharma robe, monastic robe, and lower garment, and one should know that it is to subtract half from the previous large size of three cubits in width and five cubits in length. The so-called "medium size is the middle" refers to the medium size of the Dharma robe, monastic robe, and lower garment, and one should know that it is any graduation between the large size of three cubits and five cubits, and the small size of half a cubit and three cubits, and half a cubit and five cubits. In order to show other aspects of the size of the lower garment, it is said, "The lower garment is two and five, and also two and four," meaning that the size of the lower garment is two cubits in width and five cubits in length, and two cubits in width and four cubits in length. The so-called "covering three circles is also acceptable" is also another aspect of the size of the lower garment, and one should know that anything from below two cubits in width and four cubits in length to covering three circles is acceptable. Two cubits in width and five cubits in length, and two cubits in width and four cubits in length, are not limited to these. The meaning of a cubit is two-sevenths of the body.
