Effort itself is a minor offense. The effort of striving beneath it to obtain is a major offense. Obtaining by any means is theft. Moreover, to mix the effort of effort and theft, it is said in another group, "It is the same for hail." In another group, even if one counts oneself, one can obtain, so counting oneself in another group is the same. In counting, it should be regarded as discarding. Here too, counting is the effort of effort, which is a minor offense. When accomplished, it is theft. Here, the scripture is: If a venerable monk temporarily counts himself in both groups, what downfall will he incur? It is a minor offense involving a major offense. The former and the latter, and the latter denying the former, are also the same. The word "also" is used to follow the phrase "it is the same as that." The object of the earliest group is the earliest. The earliest group, which is the group in which he had previously counted himself, what is being denied? Because of what is being denied, it is said, "For the latter." The meaning is that it denies the other later groups that are different from the previously counted group. The object of the latest group is the latest. The latest group, which is the group in which he was later counted, what is being denied? Because of what is being denied, it is said, "For the former." The meaning is that it denies the individuals belonging to the group in which he had previously counted himself. That denial is also the same, and should be regarded as discarding in counting. Here too, denial is effort itself, which is a minor offense. When accomplished, it is theft. Here, the scripture is: If a venerable monk is allowed to count and then denies, what downfall will he incur? It is a minor offense involving a major offense. From which group should his gains be taken? Therefore, it is said, "In his share, in that group where he was first counted among all of them." The meaning is that his share is

Those belong to the Sangha that is counted first among all Sanghas. That Sangha, which is counted first among all, has the right to the share itself. There is no downfall in taking a share from that Sangha. Non- Declaring ownership by a non-owner is also the same. The term "non-owner" refers to a person who does not have the right to a share. If he declares that he belongs here and proclaims himself as the owner, then that is the same as before, and it should be regarded as similar to the case of abandoning (the share) during counting. Here, declaring ownership is merely the preparatory stage of the action, which is a minor offense. If completed, it is theft itself. Here, the root is that a monastic monk temporarily obtains unexpected wealth, and although he has no right to it, he declares that he has the right to it. What downfall would he commit? It is committing a minor offense related to a gross offense. The saying "begging without being instructed" is also the same, and it should be regarded as similar to the case of abandoning (the share) during counting. Here, begging without being instructed is merely the preparatory stage of the action, which is a minor offense. If completed, it is theft itself. Here, the root is that a monastic monk comes before a householder, and temporarily, he comes to the relative of that householder, and the householder says, "Please give me this or that thing, give me many things." If he does so, what downfall would he commit? It is committing a minor offense related to a gross offense. Eleventh fascicle. Denying contempt, borrowing, and entrusting is the preparation. The saying "denying contempt, borrowing, and entrusting is the preparation" means that denying contempt, borrowing, and entrusting is the preparation, which should be understood as the preparation related to a gross offense, not a minor offense. If one is determined to covet and not give, then it is considered theft itself. The term "contempt" refers to crooked contempt. The term "borrowing" refers to the prior promise to repay the debt. The term "entrusting" refers to entrusting and placing. The saying "if one covets, it is theft" means that in the case of contempt, etc., if one is determined to covet and not give, then it is theft. When is it theft? If one hesitates and is doubtful, then even if the position has been moved and the object is complete, it will only constitute a gross offense.
