It should be understood as "without remainder." Likewise, from the beginning of the story, if a monk steals three mashakas, will he commit a parajika offense? He replied, "Yes, if twelve mashakas equal one karshapana." If one steals more than five mashakas, will one not commit a parajika offense? He replied, "Yes, if forty mashakas equal one karshapana." There, stealing ten mashakas was considered to be a parajika offense. Now, stealing four mashakas should be understood as committing a parajika offense, because one karshapana is the measure of sixteen panas. If the distinction of karshapana differs due to differences in place and time, then how should its value be calculated? Therefore, it was said that the place and time of the theft determine its calculation. Whatever the value calculation of the place and time of the theft, whether the value of that karshapana is twelve mashakas equal to one karshapana, or sixteen mashakas, or twenty mashakas, or forty mashakas, or other similar value calculations, if one steals one-fourth of a karshapana calculated in this way, one should know that one will commit a parajika offense. However, the value calculations of other countries, other times, and other continents should not be calculated in other countries, times, and continents. If one says "five mashakas, etc.," then for those things that cannot be valued by the larger substance itself, such as five mashakas, etc., one might assume that they have no value, and that stealing them would not result in a parajika offense. To avert this thought, it was said that what cannot be valued by its greatness is the ultimate perfection. Just as the value of diamonds and other precious jewels cannot be determined by their size, that is the ultimate perfection, it is infinite value. The ultimate of excellence is the ultimate perfection, because it is the ultimate perfection that is most praised. Here, it should be understood that the "etc." mentioned in "five mashakas, etc." refers to the ultimate, from six to the infinite. Whatever is too small to be valued, because it is not a real object, even if stolen, will not result in a downfall.

To dispel the doubt of whether one would fall because of it, it is said, "If it is not permissible to place a value on something small, then it is not considered as not belonging to the category (of theft)." This means that for this sutra, it is not permissible to place a value on something small, because it is not permissible to place a value on something small. The "there" refers to the place where value is placed. If one steals something on which it is not permissible to place a value, then it is not considered as not belonging to the category (of theft), but rather belongs to the category (of theft), and therefore constitutes a major or minor offense. If someone asks, "The relics of the Buddha are not to be sold, so if one steals the relics of the Buddha, how should the transgression be established?" Therefore, it is said, "The relics of the Buddha are priceless jewels." This means that it is easy to steal something that cannot be valued, and the relics of the Buddha are priceless jewels, and should be understood as having reached the peak of perfection. Any jewel that is measured, estimated, and cannot be valued is a priceless jewel. It is both a priceless jewel and a jewel, and its essence is such. The sutra teaches in this way: For example, if someone steals a priceless jewel possessed by people with the intention to steal, if the value of that priceless jewel in that place exists as it is, then that person will be judged as defeated (fallen). If the value of that priceless jewel does not exist as it is, then just as the transgression is established according to the value, the establishment of the transgression of the relics of the Buddha is also the same. To dispel the notion that any intention to steal will lead to defeat (fall), it is said, "If it is for the purpose of offering, then it is a minor offense." This means that for the purpose of offering, stealing the objects of offering is for the purpose of offering. Its essence is such. If one steals for the purpose of offering, then it is a minor offense. The sutra here says: If for the purpose of offering, one thinks, "This is my teacher, I will show respect to this," and steals, then it is a minor offense. To show that even if there is an intention to steal, temporarily stealing to copy the scriptures is not a transgression, (the sutra says:) There is no transgression in copying the scriptures.
