The work of handwriting should be done as work, and also with a mind of merit, not for wages or rewards. "The work of handwriting should be done as work" means things like cooking. "Work" means things like sewing, and that should be done. "Also with a mind of merit" is also connected to "should do work." "Not for wages or rewards" is a synonym for not doing it for a price. "The definitive word of a place is not misleading," "the definitive word of a place" means the language of each place. "Not misleading" is a synonym for not being deceived. Likewise, In the Vinaya-vibhaṅga, the Blessed One said, "Bhikkhuni, what is the meaning of what you said, 'ava svātha'?" She replied, "Venerable, it means 'fallen' in the world." The Blessed One said, "Bhikkhus, one will not fall by the definitive word of a place." This is to dispel suspicion of theft. If you pick up something that has fallen, do not hide it for a long time, so it is said: "Fallen object" means clothes, etc., that have fallen outside. "If picked up" means that if someone else's clothes, etc., have fallen outside, a bhikkhu picks them up temporarily with the intention of not letting them scatter. "Do not hide it for a long time," here, how long is "long"? It means that the time until others suspect, "This person has hidden it," that time should be regarded as long, and it should not be hidden until then. If you don't know who the owner is, who should you give it to? Therefore, it is said: "It should be given to the steward." The fallen clothes, etc., that have been picked up should be given to the steward of the sangha. If he asks what to do, therefore, it is said: "If he suspects that it belongs to a renunciate, he should show it to the sangha." If the steward suspects from some signs that it belongs to a renunciate, then in order to determine the owner of the item, he should show it to the sangha. If the owner of the item is not found, what should be done at that time? Therefore, if the owner is not found

It is said that the item should be hung on the drying rope. If no owner claims, "This is mine," and the owner is not found, then the steward monk should hang the item on the rope called the drying rope. It is called the drying rope because robes and other items are hung on it to dry. To make it visible to everyone, it should be hung in a conspicuous place, such as on a pillar. To avoid being accused of theft, it is said that medicine should not be forced on a patient who does not allow it. If the patient does not request it, the caregiver or others should not force medicine on them. The explanation of the defeat due to taking what is not given is complete. Having explained the section on distinguishing taking what is not given, now we will discuss the section on expedient means. One should not claim ownership by means other than giving what is accompanied by possession. That is to say, robbers plunder, and whatever is accompanied by possession, such as cemeteries with guardians, worldly temples, the lord of the life tree, etc., must be given by the owner. One should not claim ownership by means such as, "This is from the rag," or "This is what I obtained from building the worldly temple." One should not claim ownership. If a monk were to take possession of something stolen by robbers, etc., with the intention of forceful possession, would that be acceptable? No, therefore it is said, one should not take what has already been taken into possession. What is called "taken into possession" refers to someone else's property that robbers, etc., have taken into possession through theft, robbery, etc. This is what is called "taken into possession" here. What is obtained through generosity, etc., is not called "taken into possession" here. For example, in the world, if one originally has nothing, but takes possession through theft, robbery, etc., that is called "taken into possession," because it is only related to taking possession.
