Not having obtained it from the monks, the Blessed One taught, "In the monastery, a place should be designated to place the bowls and Dharma robes of the monks and nuns," as it is said. The term "at all times" refers to not only summer, etc. Since the scriptures mentioned here do not rely on the distinction of time, this sutra passage is stated. Therefore, when vowing to stay for the summer retreat, some may suddenly arrive, so lodging and bedding should be arranged. Saying "at all times" is to indicate that one should not follow this, because the distinctions are not fully stated. For both vows, one should understand them as the former and the latter. The term "base" refers to the base of the dwelling. If many arrive, who among the residents should assign the bedding? It means that if many newly arrived monks arrive, the bedding should be assigned by those who had previously vowed to reside there. The phrase "one should not do after vowing to reside" means that for the second assignment, which is the later vow, one should trust whichever is the last vow. Here, the scripture comes from the Vibhanga, saying that the second vow of residing for the summer retreat, along with the third included, is not for pure monks relying on future monks. If there are many, then for one or even two, etc., which is a general situation, the term "two, etc." refers to starting from the base of the dwelling, etc., until the end, it should be indicated that if there are many, one should assign. For bases that are so many, one should assign to each one. It means that for all those assigned, all assignments will be completed. The phrase "one should not demand bedding for the sake of staying one night" means that mentioning bedding is just an example, and monasteries, etc., are also dwellings. Here, the scripture comes from the Miscellaneous Matters, saying that a monk should not demand bedding for the sake of staying one night. The phrase "one should not demand a monastery out of greed for gain" means that one should also understand that one should be stingy with bedding. Here, the scripture is: Then at another time, bedding should be arranged for the monks according to their seniority.

Now, a Brahmin came to the monastery, and when he saw this, he thought, 'Who would not have faith in these sons of the Shakya monks who distribute in this way?' So faith arose. He had a monastery built and offered it to the monastic community of monks. The monks said, 'It's too wet.' They didn't accept it. He had it plastered with mud and offered it. The monks said, 'It's too desolate.' They didn't accept it. That Brahmin, knowing that they didn't accept it because they wanted to gain profit, thought, 'The monks, sons of the Shakya, accept monasteries because they want to gain profit.' So he began to do so. The Blessed One taught, 'Monks should not accept monasteries because they want to gain profit, but should accept monasteries out of compassion for the benefactors.' This is what this passage summarizes. Therefore, here it says 'with a compassionate heart,' which is only symbolic, so this is not summarized. 'Everything should be fully utilized' refers to not accepting the monastery. If asked, 'How can everything be fully utilized?' Therefore, sometimes it can be used for reading, recitation, sitting meditation, walking, or any other activity. Sometimes it can be used to place the alms bowl and robes. Sometimes it can be used for sleeping at night, sometimes it can be used for sitting meditation in the morning, noon, and afternoon, it should be used in this way.' The 'that' mentioned here refers to the thing that everything should be fully utilized for. Some sutras say, 'Sometimes it should be used for reading, for recitation, sometimes for placing the alms bowl and robes, sometimes for walking.' Some sutras say, 'Sometimes it should be used for sitting meditation in the morning, sometimes it should be used for sitting meditation at noon, sometimes it should be used for sitting meditation in the afternoon, sometimes it should be used for sitting meditation at night.' Therefore, this sutra was made to summarize both situations. 'Having vowed to stay, one should repair the foundation of the dwelling that is broken and cracked,' here, 'broken' means one side is broken off, and 'cracked' means cracked. 'The nuns who are staying for the summer retreat should repair the summer retreat house,' which means all together.
