Oh! If half is built for the sake of the Sangha, remuneration should be given. Know that there is nothing inconsistent with the rules in this. Therefore, its statement is like this. Here, the word "half" refers to tending towards a part, not just an equal half, but means having built a little bit. In this distinction, the Blessed One taught from "not having started building" to "should do together like this." The time it indicates is that if it is winter, it is after the meal. If it is summer, it is before the meal. The time is the time indicated by the remuneration. Here, the text says that monks work in summer after the meal, and in winter before the meal. The Blessed One taught that in winter one should work after the meal, and in summer one should work before the meal, and so on. The phrase "the time for food work has passed" means that until the time for food work, such as washing the bowl, has passed, one should not work before that. The phrase "without finishing those tasks, one should not engage in livelihood" means that "those tasks" refer to the work of remuneration. "Livelihood" refers to going for alms and so on. The phrase "its end is washing hands and feet" means that "its end" refers to the end of doing the cleaning. Here, the word "end" refers to the smallest of all these. The phrase "with what residue of the hands should one smear the child" means that if the monks work before the meal, then at that time one should smear the child with the residue of the hands. The phrase "after the meal, smear drinks and hands and feet" means that if the monks work after the meal, then at that time one should smear drinks and so on with the residue of the hands. The doors of the dwellings should be opened. The door bolts should be put down. Handles, peepholes, and pieces of leather, etc., should be placed after "put down." The phrase "windows should be opened" refers to the windows of the dwellings. If asked in which direction they should be opened, therefore it is said "in the middle," referring to the middle of the wall.
