Moreover, if the thieves are many, then it should be connected in this way: stealing their respective shares of items is different. There, the value of the share stolen by one thief is how much, and he falls into offense because of that value. For the second person, how much is the value, and he falls into offense because of that value. Similarly, for the third person and so on, that is the meaning. If there are many things that should be put together and separated, then for the thieves also, there are many, and this is the only accomplishment. For one thing that should be put together and separated, how much is the value of the share, and one falls into one offense because of that value. Whatever is the second share of what should be put together and separated, one should understand that the value is second, and so on. The basis of these sutras is, as the Blessed One said, if a monk steals five mashakas (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) and so on, he will fall into a root downfall. If many monks steal, will they not fall into a root downfall? Yes, if they steal from many people, they will fall into a gross offense. Similarly, stealing together with many people will also result in a gross offense. Here, the limit of "many people" is that, considering that if one person's share is not enough to constitute a complete item, then for those many people, this statement of gross offense remains valid. If there are many ideas about this matter, then obtaining it is considered stealing. That is to say, if for this matter, the thieves are many, then for anything that has not arisen, if the ideas are the same, then it is gathering together to do it. If different ideas arise and many thieves are working hard, then obtaining that thing is considered stealing, not swelling. When associated with connection, before obtaining it, one considers it to be one's own, then it will not arise here. The basis here is, if a monk places a Dharma robe in the dark, and four monks steal it, what offense will they incur? The answer is: they will incur a gross offense. Sometimes they will incur a root downfall, when divided into four parts, each part constitutes a complete item, then they will incur a root downfall. If it is not complete, they will incur a gross offense. Therefore, one should clearly understand the items, the owner, the follow-up actions, and the final circumstances, the rituals in these cases of taking what is not given.

This is about the occasion of the second request for defeat. If one dies before receiving, then it should be kept, which is the receiving, that is, the grasping. At the time of distinguishing, if a portion has been taken beforehand, if the ordained one dies, then from where that portion was taken, it should be kept there. This is not the property of the deceased. Conversely, if it is the property of the deceased, that is, if the substance was taken before death, then at that time it is related to death. That from which it was taken should not be given separately there, meaning that this is only the property of the deceased. The Sangha is like brothers, so stealing for the sake of the Sangha is not not taking possession. For example, brothers have common property, but they do not divide all the property separately, so the thought of taking possession arises, similarly, the monks also belong to the Sangha. Therefore, stealing for the sake of the Sangha is not not doing it for oneself. If one person steals about five masha of goods for the sake of the Sangha, because the share of each monk is not sufficient, there is no gross offense, this is certain. Here the story is that a resident monk had someone plow the field of the Sangha, and also had someone plow the field of a householder nearby, and the householder came and said: Venerable, why did you have my field plowed? The monk said: This is not yours, it is the field of the Sangha. The householder said: Venerable, I will show four kinds of inhuman punishments. The householder, according to the old village custom, drove stakes into the boundary, then dug them up and showed them. After the monk stole or robbed, he let the householder leave, moved the stake inside, and then plowed that field, and the householder came again and said: Venerable, you have completely failed, why are you still plowing? He felt remorse, and the Blessed One said: If the object is sufficient, it will become a defeat. Here, the word 'if the object is sufficient' means that from whatever share is there, the offense here will arise.
