There is no pure king, therefore why is it not a defeat? Because the drinking of what has been appropriated has not been completely fulfilled. Thus, the scripture is: He said to the sick attendant, "Prepare three loads and porridge, and also offer to the Sangha, and we ourselves will also eat and drink." After saying this, he distributed the goods to them. They thought, "What shall we do with three loads and porridge? Let's call this three loads and porridge, and then we ourselves will divide the goods." Thinking this, they gave him three loads and porridge, and then divided the goods. Later he regretted it, and the Bhagavan taught, "There is no defeat, but a gross offense will be committed." This is because, for those who are given, the idea of appropriation does not arise there, so there is no cause for defeat, therefore it appears. Then, for what is not cut off, where there is no appropriation, how does it arise? Because it belongs there, the object remains there. If an ignorant owner, for something that has no owner, such as a treasure in a monastery that no one has appropriated, how does one obtain it? Just like stealing the belongings of the unpleasant people of the north, it is not possible to take it without giving it, because it has not been appropriated. If the thought of stealing arises, a gross offense will be committed. Here, for the limbs belonging to the actual ritual, the act of completely grasping human beings is added for the purpose of abandonment. The so-called "with its idea" means for him, with the idea of a treasure that has no owner. For those who possess this distinction, this is a gross offense, for a treasure that has no owner, with the idea of having an owner, whether by a human being or someone else, it is a gross offense. Here, because this action is extremely excellent, because it does not fully possess five mashakas, etc., therefore for the idea of a treasure having no owner, and for the idea of having an owner, whether by a human or non-human, or a human owner, the offense committed is lighter than a gross offense, so it is a misdeed. The so-called "one's own" refers to one's own objects, five mashakas, etc., gathered there with the intention of stealing.

If one steals oneself or instigates others to steal, and instructs others, it becomes a grave offense. The word "knowing" here should be understood as "one's own knowing" in this context. As the scripture says: Therefore, a Bhikshu should not take his own bowl and robes with a stealing mind. If a Bhikshu takes his own bowl and robes with a stealing mind, it will constitute a grave offense. If one knows that it is one's own thing but it is possessed by others, it is only a grave offense, because in this case, the stealing mind is very strong. As the scripture says: Bhikshus, this foolish defeated one commits a grave offense because of his old robes. Knowing that it is one's own thing but it is possessed by others is only a grave offense. Knowing that it is one's own thing but thinking it is someone else's, or thinking that something unpossessed is unpossessed, is similar to falling. Similarly, thinking that something unpossessed is unpossessed, or thinking that something possessed is possessed, is also only a grave offense. "Other beings" refers to beings other than humans, that is, belonging to other beings, here the word "one's own" applies. For the complete possession between other beings and humans, even if there is a physical part separate from this, it constitutes a grave offense. Here it says "because of knowing", meaning that because of knowing that this is something of other beings. The scripture here is: If he thinks, this is not the stealing of birds, nor the stealing of humans, etc. The knowing arising from the connection with non-human beings is only a grave offense for the connection with other beings, because this is very supreme. Even if it is separated by hiding, wasting, or abandoning without being possessed, it is also so. That is to say, even if it is separated by hiding, etc. without being possessed, it constitutes a grave offense. The "hiding" mentioned here refers to putting it into a mud pit, etc. The "wasting" mentioned refers to wasting it by burning, cutting down, etc. The "abandoning" mentioned refers to releasing prey and fish, etc.
