It is said, except with the intention of not eating. If you ask, are these two able to reside in any place? The answer is no. Therefore, it is explained by the phrase, "except for residing in a temple and its vicinity." If you ask, with any intention, can any intention other than this do this? Therefore, for those who are not related to ownership and who have the intention of not wasting things, this is the reason. The meaning of the phrase "except for residing in a temple and its vicinity" is like that. It is only said that there is no fault in touching and allowing to be touched in order to protect it. Since it has not been shown how to fully protect it, what is to be stated is: the so-called "do not discard it" refers to residing in a temple or residing in the vicinity of a temple. Do not discard the precious or what is mentioned as precious, meaning that in order to protect it, do not obtain that desire. If it is lost from the owner, this is implied. If desire is obtained for the sake of protection, then how can it not be discarded? Therefore, it is said, "It should be collected for seven or eight days," or covered with a walking path, or covered with a pile of leaves. If the owner does not fall on all the signs, do not give it because he says, "This is mine," meaning do not casually give it to those who do not fall on the signs of the object and just casually say, "This is mine." If it does not come, then it should be placed in the monastery's storehouse. Here, "its" refers to the owner. "Below it" refers to after seven or eight days. If you ask, how long should it be placed and kept here? Therefore, it is said, "It should be kept until the end of six months." If the owner does not come even at that time, then it is said what should be done after that, therefore, it is said, "If it does not come after that, it can be used on what is found from the Buddha or the Sangha," the so-called "from which place" refers to the Buddha.
