If I am with him, and there are laypeople there, is it okay to have lunch there, can we slaughter there? Or not? Close relatives can eat, it is said. If a place has been emptied, if a bhikkhu temporarily resides there, then that place is also suitable for a bhikkhu to reside. If the possessions of the laypeople have not been removed, then it is not emptied. The personal residence of the novices, and the public place where the novices gather, that is not the residence of a bhikkhu. In the residence of a bhikkhu or the residence of the bhikkhu sangha, even if only novices reside, it is still the residence of a bhikkhu, because the novices are the retinue of the bhikkhu. Taking in hand, cooking inside, and those cooked by a bhikkhu, those are forbidden because of the time, holding them until the next day is not included. Those are forbidden, meaning those taken in hand etc. cannot be eaten, thus forbidden. Because of the time, meaning the morning until noon, and after that until dusk, if taking in hand etc. is done at that time, then it can only be eaten at that time, it cannot be eaten after that time. Some sutras say that if a monk takes medicine that causes downfall himself, acceptance should be given, here it says if one obtains what is taken in hand, cooked inside, and those cooked by a bhikkhu, can they be eaten? Close relatives can eat, because of the time, it is said. Other sutras also say that if one obtains medicine that has been cut off for survival on suitable land, can it be eaten? What has been granted cannot be eaten, it is said. Putting these two together, it is said like this. The previous sutra says that if one spends the night inside, because it contradicts the later sutra, it should be known to be wrong, because here it is forbidden to eat what has been spent the night inside. In the previous sutra, adding "because of the time," it should also be known to be wrong. Because from the morning until sunset, and after that until the end of the next period, if taking in hand

Like these, they should be eaten at the very time they are made, and not after that, which is called "for the sake of time." Even remaining in the last part of the night, it is said to be "overnight." If that is the case, since the later discourse is completely abandoned, what does not correspond to "for the sake of time" is completely abandoned, and the remaining words of "overnight" are not made, so they are combined here. Here, from grasping the previous discourse, the negation of those cooked inside is not included. "For the sake of time" has been shown. The later "holding until the end of life" is also directly abandoned, and its meaning is this: what is taken in hand, etc., should be eaten, but not at other times, which is called prohibiting eating for the sake of time, and by prohibiting that, what is held until the end of life is included. Those taken in hand according to the ritual instructed as said, should be eaten until the end of life, that is its meaning. For those that remain especially, this is the rule. For those that do not remain especially, it is only included for the sake of time. What is contaminated is half of the food, for this, whatever the bowl, etc., is contaminated by food, etc., that is half of the food, not the complete food, meaning it has been reduced. It should be known through this that this is not a naming of what has become edible. Here the discourse is that if a monk eats what is contaminated by a bowl, a small bowl, a slanting mouth, a salt bag, a bowl container, clothes, a firestone, a bed, a low bed, a towel, a bottle, a pill, a key, a crooked key, and stored things, it will all become a downfall, it is said. Here, it is contaminated for the sake of food, meaning it is eaten, not for one's own enjoyment. These are because they have been made without limit. For the definition of storage, eating food mixed with it is here considered to be wanting to fully enjoy it. It also includes eating and drinking with an unclean mouth, meaning eating what is unclean in the mouth.
