Having made offerings of torma and prayers to the Three Jewels, and having spoken of generosity, etc. Those deities who dwell in these trees, may they seek other abodes. This tree will be used for the work of stupas or the Sangha. Having said this, let the speaker know. These words were spoken. "In front of it" means speaking of generosity in front of the cutting. "Having done" means relying on all the deities dwelling there. It should be understood through meaning. "Stupa or" means the meaning of the stupa itself, it should be called a stupa. "Of the Sangha" means the meaning of the Sangha itself, it should be said. If changes such as fire appearing, blood flowing, branches shaking, or leaves falling occur, then he should speak of generosity towards the field of merit, and praise and non-praise of stinginess, etc. "Giving together with the field" means definitely giving to the field. "Field" means praising the nature of the Buddha and the Sangha. "To generosity" also means the meaning of non-praise of stinginess. "If you don't give up, don't cut down" even if you do that, if you don't give up because of changes such as fire appearing, don't cut down. "Knowing is the main thing" means making cognition the main thing. "Not diminishing" means where? Therefore, it was said, "Because seeds and sprouts are suitable for growing." "Not making the seeds suitable for growing," and "for the sprouts." Here, the growth of grass, etc., is called sprouts. Having said "not making it suitable for growing," even if there is something that has already been made suitable for growing, it should be understood that the seed itself has not fallen. Here, if you follow something, then for that, is cognition the main thing? Therefore, it was said, "Even if the roots are destroyed." "Even" the word "even" is used to express the meaning of complete inclusion. Even these seeds up to the roots are sprouts that can grow, for anything else that is not the meaning. Here, if the scripture says to pull out the roots of trees, then a misdeed will be committed.

Thus it was said. If it becomes what through damage, cutting, and suitability, etc.? Therefore, it was said, "It can be done in any way." To indicate that point, it was said, "Even through transformation." Here, the Vinaya text says, if a monk shakes and strikes the fruits on a tree, what offense is committed? If those are ripe fruits, then it is a minor offense. If they are unripe fruits, then it is a downfall. It was said, "Also, by pressing with roots, mud, and dust, etc." Here, the Vinaya text says, if a monk presses a tree, saying, 'Let it rot, let it completely rot,' and covers it with green grass, dust, flour, or anything else, what offense is committed? It is declared to be a minor offense. Here, considering only the action itself, the statement that pressing trees, etc., is a minor offense. Here, it is encompassed by the word 'mud.' It was said, "Also, by fists, etc." The word 'fist' refers to pouring urine and other liquids. The word 'etc.' includes pulling branches, etc., as well as circular objects and remnants, etc. Here, the Vinaya text says, if a monk pours urine and essence, etc., towards a green area. It was said, "Also, by placing it in the wind and sun." Here, the Vinaya text says, in the distinction of nuns, if a nun places these five types of seeds in the wind and sun, saying, 'Let them rot,' if the seeds completely rot, then it is a downfall. If they do not completely rot, then it is a minor offense. It was said, "Also, on dry land." Here, the Vinaya text says, if a monk places these five types of seeds on dry land, saying, 'Let them rot,' if the seeds rot, it becomes five offenses. If they do not completely rot, it becomes five minor offenses. With what kind of intention? Therefore, it was said, "Because of that intention," that is, because of the intention to make it rot. Is it done only by oneself? Therefore, it was said, "Either oneself or another can do it."

In what circumstances here, what kind of transgression leads to downfall? Therefore, what causes downfall? The answer is: the root offense. That is to say, downfall also leads to the arising of root offenses. If one action causes multiple seeds to fall, is it one or many? Therefore, it depends on the number of downfalls. That is to say, here it refers to the number of these downfalls. How is the offense determined by the number of downfalls? Is the number determined based on the trunk, branches, and leaves? Therefore, it is said to start from the trunk. That is to say, if a tree is cut from the root of the trunk, even if there are many small branches and leaves, it will only constitute one downfall. Similarly, cutting a branch from its trunk, even if there are many small branches and leaves; cutting a branch from its small trunk, even if there are many leaves; cutting a leaf from its trunk, even if there are many leaves like a seven-leaf tree, or many branches like a castor bean leaf, it will only constitute one downfall. The trunk mentioned here is an example of the lower part. Therefore, cutting the branch of a leaf, or cutting the top of a sprout, here refers to the root. Slightly overlapping from the trunk to the leaves, or slightly overlapping from the level of the leaves, is a fault of action, and it should be known that this is not a root offense. The Vinaya here states that if a bhikshu cuts a tree with one action, he commits one fault and one downfall. If a bhikshu cuts a tree with two actions, he commits two faults and one downfall, and so on. For the sake of growth, the Vinaya is explained, and from the Vinaya itself, for the sake of seeds, it should be understood in this way. How to understand it? Because it is said "the number of downfalls," it is said that it is not other seeds, but seeds in the same direction, therefore it is said "starting from the trunk." All trunks appear as one.
