The term "ascetic" refers to a monk, and is a synonym for "examination." "Living utensils" refers to substances such as medicines that are used to sustain life, and is a synonym for "necessities for living." "Any one" refers to some of the things just mentioned, such as the alms bowl. Others say that needles, awls, etc., are others. The fruits of the ascetic's conduct are the four, such as entering the stream. The Abhidharma masters say there are eighty-nine. The conduct of an ascetic is the path without outflows. These are its fruits, because it says, "The ascetic's conduct is the stainless path, the fruits are conditioned and unconditioned, and there are eighty-nine of them." "Falling away from the scriptures" means falling away from the recitation of the sutras, the Vinaya, and the Abhidharma. "Universal connection" refers to the nature of the nine fetters, which are attachment, anger, pride, ignorance, views, clinging, doubt, jealousy, and stinginess. "Fetter" refers to the three: desire, hatred, and delusion. "Latent" refers to the nature of desire, desire for existence, anger, pride, ignorance, views, and doubt, which are connected in sequence, or to the nature of growing in conjunction with objects, which are seven in number.

Cessation means being free from the fears of birth, aging, death, and so on. Worldly fears arise from water, fire, wind, stones, kings, and so on. The last is the end. Knowing cessation means that because the afflictions are exhausted, a definite understanding arises, thinking, "My afflictions are exhausted." The term "whose birth is the last" means the last of birth. Exhaustion is because the fruit is complete. Cessation means declining from the very state of arising now. Separation means the reversal of action. Transformation means that although entering, it ceases. Attainment means accomplishment. Worldly attainments are things like food, drink, bedding, cushions, clothing, and dwellings. "Alas" means affection. "Even if transformed" means even if transformed. "How could it not be" means aspiration. Stream-enterer means that because the afflictions to be abandoned by the sight of the three realms are abandoned. The noble path is the cause for attaining nirvana, because it accomplishes it. Because they enter and attain it, they are stream-enterers, that is the meaning. Once-returner means that because the six aspects of afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation are abandoned, having been born among the gods, once, that is, one time coming to the human world, thereby making an end to suffering. Non-returner means that because the nine aspects of afflictions to be abandoned by the cultivation that operates in the desire realm are abandoned, they do not come to the desire realm for the sake of rebirth. Arhat means that because the subtle aspects of afflictions to be abandoned by the cultivation of the peak of existence are abandoned, they are worthy of being offered to by all beings. The so-called fault becomes gross, here gross is said, others say this, if one says, "I am a stream-enterer, a once-returner, a non-returner, an arhat," then undoubtedly one will think that one is a stream-enterer, etc. The superior human dharma is explained separately, but in reality, the nature of the words corresponds to the superior human dharma.
