So-called "purity," etc., refers to those two that have the extreme of existence and the extreme of non-existence. So-called "abandoning" does not mean completely abandoning and making it solely existent, because that would lead to the extreme of permanence. Nor is it solely non-existent, because that would lead to the extreme of annihilation. However, so-called "the Dharma of the Middle Way" means that the Middle Way is neither extremely existent nor extremely non-existent. It is not extremely existent because it is momentary, and when an antidote is found, the extreme of continuity will also be cut off. It is also not extremely non-existent because it exists moment by moment, and when an antidote is found, the continuity of this side exists. So-called "for example" is to indicate what is near. So-called "when this exists" is the cause; so-called "this arises" is the effect, and this negates the assertion of cause. If that is the case, then will the effect arise from a permanent cause? Therefore, it is said, "This arises, therefore this arises," meaning that so-called "this," that is, from the arising of the cause, the effect will arise, and this negates the assertion of a permanent cause, because the cause is of the nature of arising and ceasing. For example, so-called "ignorance," etc., refers to the stage of afflictions of the previous life, and here the word ignorance is used, the stage of karma is indicated by the word formation, and the moment of the union of the five aggregates is indicated by the word consciousness. After consciousness, as long as the six sense bases have not arisen, that stage is called name and form. Above the gathering of object, faculty, and consciousness is the six sense bases, and the gathering of object, etc., is contact. That which is able to completely distinguish the aspects of pleasure, etc., is feeling, and the stage of desire for enjoyment and sexual intercourse is craving. When one begins to seek the reasons for enjoyment and runs around everywhere, that is the stage of grasping, and the stage of karma for rebirth is becoming.
