"Having characteristics" refers to the characteristics of remembering names, lineages, bloodlines, and families. "Mindfulness of place" is the place. Alternatively, the word "characteristic" refers to the intermediate state (bardo), because it is only a characteristic. The place of former times is referred to by the word "place." Among these, what is indicated by lineages such as the royal lineage is the intermediate state, as well as the place of former times and what is called "father." Correctly accepting dharma, there are four ways of correctly accepting dharma: such as being happy now but ripening into suffering in the future, and so on. Regarding the cause of committing to actions entered into through wrong views, and committing to dharma. "That cause" means that the wrong view itself becomes the cause, and wherever it exists, that is the cause. Wherever it itself becomes a condition, that is the distinction of that condition, because they are the affairs that accomplish, and are special actions. "After separating from the body" means after disintegration. "After death" means after life has completely decayed.

The evil destiny is the realm of the hungry ghosts. The evil path is the realm of animals. Falling is the realm of hell, each hell being a hell for sentient beings. Evil destinies, evil paths, falling, and hell are what are called evil destinies, evil paths, falling sentient beings. According to karma, some will be born into evil destinies, some into evil paths, some into falling, and some into what are called hell beings. "Happy destiny" and so forth, because of going beautifully, is a happy destiny, and one will be born there. The human world is also included by mentioning happy destiny, therefore the world of the heavens is mentioned. The heavens are where the animal realm exists, therefore it is said that one will be born as a god. Regarding "exhaustion of defilements" and so forth, defilements are desire and so forth, and their exhaustion is abandonment. To realize that or its opposite, to make it manifest is to make it manifest. "This is suffering, the noble truth" is the nature of the result. "This is the origin of suffering" is the nature of the five aggregates that have become the cause. Cessation is exhaustion, and the path is what has become the means of obtaining exhaustion. Regarding "noble truth," because the noble ones see it through their own nature, therefore these are true for the noble ones, so it is a noble truth. "To know thoroughly as it is" is to see suchness with uncontaminated wisdom. "Knowing" is through the path of non-interruption. "Seeing" is through the path of liberation. "The mind is liberated from the exhaustion of desire" means that because the defilement of desire has been abandoned, the mind is liberated. The afflictions that are practiced in the desire realm, except for ignorance, together with their bonds, are the defilements of desire. Abandoning ignorance, the afflictions that are practiced in the form and formless realms, together with their bonds, are the defilements of existence. The ignorance of the three realms is the defilement of ignorance. "In liberation" means liberation from the bonds of affliction.
