It is cut off because it causes extreme downfall, and it is called killing because it cuts off life. Life is also the master of life, which is the inhalation and exhalation of breath. Stopping it is destruction. Abandoning it is like this: I should take hold of turning away from this with my mind, not doing it. The so-called 'turning back from killing' (Sanskrit: nivartate) means completely turning back from the act of preventing the lives of others with body and speech during common behavior. The so-called abandoning of whipping means being separated from what has become a means of harming others, except for weapons. The so-called abandoning of weapons means completely abandoning the harm caused by weapons. Because there is shame in this, it is the one with shame, that is, the one who possesses qualities, respect, and fear of sin. Because of having compassion, it is the compassionate one. To what object is compassion directed? It is mentioned that it is directed to all sentient beings. Here, it is considered that all those who can be named are sentient beings. Those who cannot be named, such as beings born in the animal realm, are included. Those who dwell invisibly, such as yakshas and rakshasas, are included in the term "bhūta" (Sanskrit: bhūta). Because they are very small, the small creatures that can be approximated by ants, such as ants, and up to them, because they are to be killed, thinking about them or killing such creatures, is turning back from killing. Regarding taking what is not given, because it is taken completely, it is taking. Taking what is not given is taking what is not given, that is, taking with the mind of stealing without giving, that is its definition. How does one turn back? It is mentioned such as giving and taking. Giving and taking is giving and taking because it completely takes and holds things. One is always delighted from the depths of the heart with the things given, so one is delighted in giving. Having the state of wanting to take what is given, abandoned, and bestowed is hoping for what is given, abandoned, and bestowed, that is, whatever is given with a mind free from expectations.
