Those who have spent and exhausted their youth in the forests, their dwelling is the final word that living itself is happiness. To that Shakya Lion, joining the tips of ten fingers, one should diligently proclaim the Dharma of subduing. For the sake of the meaning of subduing, listen now. The so-called "ten fingers" are the ten fingernails of both hands. The so-called "for the sake of the meaning of subduing" is for the sake of subduing the disciples. Having heard, the great sage should practice as he has said, and for even the smallest faults, one should diligently guard and practice. The so-called "for the smallest faults" refers to the smallest parts. The so-called "diligently practicing" means to diligently undertake efforts in guarding and so on. Constantly chasing with diligence, for the mind-horse that is difficult to control, with a hundred-nailed sharp rein, this is the subduing. The so-called "constantly chasing with diligence" means that when entering the pure side like the path of ease, one should constantly pull as if thirsty, and chase and urge with the whip of diligence. The so-called "difficult to control" means that when entering the non-virtuous side like a wrong path, it floats like the wind, and it is difficult to pull back and subdue with the rein of discipline. The so-called "conforming" refers to falling into conditions, for example, constantly chasing with the diligence of a whip, and the horse that is controlled by the bit of the rein needs to be trained with a hundred-nailed sharp rein, similarly, for the mind-horse, constantly chasing with the effort of diligence, and subduing with the rein of discipline, it needs to be bound by the sharp hundred-nailed subduing that pierces the nail of training. The so-called "hundred-nailed sharp" refers to having many nails that pierce the foundation of what should be cut off. The so-called "hundred" is an example of many. Those great ones who can return with just words and do not transgress the boundaries, those people are good men and horses, and they will surely win the battle of afflictions. This verse shows the benefits of following practice. The so-called "boundaries" refers to the place of learning. The so-called "not transgressing" means not separating. The so-called "good men and horses" means that the horses of those people are like good horses.

It is so. The battlefield of afflictions is so called because afflictions are similar to a battlefield. "Definitely victorious transformation" means transforming into a union and possessing fruits. Those who do not have this rein, and who never desire, are agitated by the battlefield of afflictions and wander around without restraint. This verse shows the faults of not following practice. "Without" means not having taken it properly, so it has not been broken. "Never" means not even once. "Will not desire" means not inclining towards discipline, so they will not manifest desire. "Agitated" means defeated. "Without restraint" means without a hook, that is, without the taming that allows one to abide in samadhi. "Wander around" means wandering in samsara. The Blessed One, etc. The Blessed One is the one who possesses the supreme collection of merit and wisdom. Because he still follows the teachings, he wants to proclaim it immediately, so he is called fortunate. The Sangha of the Hearers, the Hearers are those who listen to the Dharma from the Tathagata, or who follow the Tathagata's teachings, that is, those who possess the three types of disciples. Their Sangha means the assembly, that is the Sangha of the Hearers. "Without fault" means without the fault of views, because wrong views have not arisen. "Without blisters" means without the disease of blisters of discipline, because there has been no defeat. "Again" means gathering. "Do not commit any evil," etc. The first root shows the purity of discipline. The second root shows the purity of wisdom. Because the perfection of the good of nirvana is accomplished by the purity of wisdom. The third root shows the purity of mind, in order to cultivate the mind of meditation. This is the Buddha's teaching, which means briefly showing the teaching. The discipline of the body is excellent, etc., the verse.
