Then, regarding my words of distinction, those that appear unclear will be liberated. Now, let us explain the unclear words of the treatise on distinction itself. Here, too, the four things, such as what should be stated, must be stated definitively, because if one is separated from what should be stated, even if it is just words, the listeners will not be respectful. Among them, the five categories of offenses here are what should be stated. Revealing their nature is the purpose. Revealing the nature is also done by this treatise called 'Distinction,' so the way of method and what arises from the method is the connection. If one completely understands the Vinaya, such as 'Distinction,' and thus completely purifies the precepts, and attains Nirvana by meditating on the noble path, that is the necessity of the purpose. Therefore, first, let us explain the verses that summarize correctly. In countless eons, even hearing the Vinaya is difficult, and grasping and retaining are difficult to obtain, and practicing is even more difficult. The meaning is that 'eon' refers to the duration of an eon, which is a category of time. 'Vinaya' refers to what leads disciples particularly towards Nirvana, or opens the path, that is, clearly shows what should and should not be done. Hearing means listening. Grasping refers to understanding through the nature of words and the nature of meaning. Retaining refers to not forgetting. All three are difficult to obtain, just as in the great ocean, the neck of a turtle happens to fit into the hole of a yoke. Even if a Buddha appears, it is difficult to obtain a human body and to be without obstacles. Therefore, even after countless great eons have passed, these are difficult to obtain, because they are obtained by relying on causes such as meeting a virtuous friend. Practicing means diligently engaging in the Vinaya. This is even more difficult to obtain than the previous three, because truly practicing depends on diligence. Therefore, the Vinaya should be spoken, listen respectfully! After hearing, one should also diligently practice as the great sage said, this is the concluding statement.
