Having made various satisfying remarks, they sat down together. After sitting down together, King Pasenadi of Kosala said this to the Blessed One: 'O Gotama, I have heard that the worthy Gotama has manifested complete enlightenment, having attained unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, and claims to be so. O Gotama, if someone were to express those words truthfully, would they not be slandering the worthy Gotama, nor be too extreme, and would those people be speaking according to what the worthy Gotama has said, proclaiming the Dharma, expressing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma, and among those who speak according to what has been said, would there be nothing contrary to the Dharma that should be blamed?' 'Great King, those who say such things, if they express it truthfully, would not be slandering me, nor be too extreme, and those people would be speaking according to what I have said, proclaiming the Dharma, expressing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma, and among those who speak according to what has been said, there is indeed nothing contrary to the Dharma that should be blamed. Why is that? Great King, because I have manifested complete enlightenment, having attained unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment.' Although the worthy Gotama said this, I do not believe the worthy Gotama. Why is that? Because, for the time being, these old ascetics and Brahmins, such as Pūraṇa Kassapa, Makkhali Gosāla, Sañjaya Belaṭṭhiputta, Ajita Kesakambalī, Pakudha Kaccāyana, Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta, etc., they have not yet claimed to have attained unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, having manifested complete enlightenment, let alone the worthy Gotama, who is young and newly ordained?' 'Great King, there are four things that should not be despised in youth, nor should youth be suppressed. Which four? Great King,

One should not especially kill a young person of noble lineage, nor should one suppress a young person. One should not especially kill a young prince who is a great king, nor should one suppress a young person. One should not especially kill a young commoner who is a great king, nor should one suppress a young commoner. One should not especially kill a young Bhikshu who is a great king, nor should one suppress a young person. Why is that? Because even though a Bhikshu who is a great king is young, he has great miraculous powers and strength. The Blessed One spoke thus. The Sugata spoke thus. The Teacher also spoke thus. One of noble lineage, endowed with good qualities, Of noble birth, endowed with fame, Even if young, should not be especially killed, A wise person should not suppress him. If a king disturbs the attainment of kingship, The royal lineage will be cut off, Wherever such a situation exists, Therefore, pay homage and prostrate to him. Therefore, protect your own life, Therefore, do not especially kill him, Because you look well to your own benefit, Therefore, you should abandon him well. In a town or in a solitary place, Wherever you see a moving being, Even if young, do not especially kill him, A wise person should not suppress him. In high or low lineages, A Naga wanders among those who seek, If they find many men and women, And children, they will seize them. Therefore, protect your own life, Therefore, do not especially kill him, Because you look well to your own benefit, Therefore, you should abandon him well. One who burns and consumes many, One who possesses the path of the incense-eater, Even if small, do not especially kill him, A wise person should not suppress him. The incense-eater who draws near and takes, Becomes small and then becomes great, With the burning flame quickly, Burns towns and cities. Therefore, protect your own life, Therefore, do not especially kill him, Because you look well to your own benefit, Therefore, do not especially kill him. Therefore, you should abandon him well. The incense-eater who possesses the path, Whatever thicket of fire is burned, When day and night have passed for it, In some places, leaves will grow. Whoever finds a Bhikshu endowed with morality, And becomes attached to him, To his son
