The so-called "Thus Spoken" is the unerring teaching. The phrase "Alas, Yaksha, you donkey!" is a Tibetan expression. From afar, in Tibetan, "Alas" is uttered, which is a secret praise of sound. In the phrase "Alas, the teacher for my sake," "Alas" is a word of great joy. "The next life" refers to the other world. "Yaksha" means secret. "Seeking one's own abode" means that you yourself choose. "Gathering the mind" means focusing on that. "Being mindful" means not doing other things. "Turning away" means suppressing the mind. "Fearful" means being afraid of the king and friends. "Unhappy" means being separated from suffering. "Promising to stay at night on the path where the cows have walked, where grass has been scattered" means that cows are revered as cleaner than the world, and are easily overlooked. Therefore, through oral transmission, nomads pass it on from one to another, and having heard it, with reverence in mind for the Buddha, they stay there at night, their continuum fully ripened, without other distractions. If they see it in the morning, they will see the truth. So for this purpose, they promise to stay at night on the path where the cows have walked, not for other reasons. The householders were all pleased individually, meaning as they wished. "Complete suffering" means sorrow. In "He spoke these verses" and so on, the Brahmin, the person without sin, the one who is completely liberated from sorrow, the one who is not defiled by the merits of desire, the one who is liberated from the aggregates of the three realms, whoever that is, sleeps peacefully in every way, because he is liberated from the complete suffering of desire and so on. How can one sleep peacefully? Therefore, he said, "Cutting off all desires" and so on, because he has cut off all craving, eliminated the complete suffering of the mind, and the person whose body and speech are both pacified, is the one who is skilled in meditation, the one who has attained a peaceful mind, without defilements, so he can sleep peacefully, because he is free from all harm. That is the nature of the world.
