The term "earth" refers to being among the retinue of consorts. Regarding "The Bhikshu Udrāyana spoke this verse," and so on. "Lord of Men" is a term of address meaning "O King." "Seeking abandoned alms" means seeking food that has been given away. "How is it that one does not grieve at all" is a synonym for "How does one not feel pain?" "A hundred measures" means possessing the weight of a hundred measures. "Moistened with meat" means soaked in meat broth. "Without wind" means comfortable and warm. "The door is tightly shut" means the door is closed. "Similar" means of the same kind. "Pleasing" means very lovely. "Listen respectfully" means to act according to instructions. "Eloquent" means speaking pleasantly. "A treasury filled with much wealth" means a treasury filled with many riches. "Having nothing" means having nothing at all. In "Udrāyana said," and so on, "King" is a term of address. "If one who is difficult to tame lives on the food of others, he is tamed by not succeeding, like an ox is tamed by a yoke." This means that if the mind of a person who is difficult to tame is not well tamed and does not know contentment, then he renounces and lives on food given by others. When that food of others is not successfully obtained, his mind, which is difficult to tame, is placed in contentment and he is tamed, just as a difficult-to-tame ox is well tamed when pressed down by a yoke. This is a synonym. "Like a lowly person" is a synonym for "like a poor person." "Whatever the mind desires" means "whatever the mind wants." In "Udrāyana said," and so on, "Whatever king in the world, whose body touches the Dharma is not a miser." This means that whatever king touches the Dharma, such as discipline, with his body, know that he is not a miser, not a poor person. This is a synonym. Why is that? Like this, he said, "That is certainly a god, or he will pass into Nirvana." Because he is the remainder of the afflictions.
