Formerly, when I attained complete and perfect enlightenment, the term "when I attained complete and perfect enlightenment" refers to the time before attaining complete and perfect enlightenment, before obtaining the unsurpassed wisdom. "Alone" means without companions. "Having gone to a solitary place" means having gone to a place empty of home. "When dwelling rightly within" means when dwelling in solitude. "To the mind" means to that which is not self. "The complete conceptualization of the mind" is stated to refute the assertion of non-Buddhists who say that just as water and milk are mixed, self and sentient beings are equally possessed, and from this, conceptualization arises. Therefore, it is said to be the complete conceptualization of the mind, meaning it is not the complete conceptualization of self. Here, "complete conceptualization" means looking inward, focusing on minute details, and is synonymous with "discrimination." "Like this" means like what will be explained below. "Alas" expresses compassion. "This world" refers to the beings of the three realms. "To a state of suffering" means to a place of dread. "Having become" means having obtained. How does it become suffering? Therefore, it is said, "Like this," etc. "Like this" is a synonym for a near indication. "Will be born" means the five aggregates of close acquisition will be born. "Will rejoice" means the senses will fully mature. "Will die" means will completely abandon the similar kind. "Will decay" means will decay in each moment. These indicate birth, aging, death, and momentary decay in one lifetime. "Will also arise" means will also take another similar kind. "However, these sentient beings" refers to those who have become old, died, and suffered in this way. "Although there is the supreme" means although there is the particularly excellent nirvana. "Definite emergence" refers to the antidote, the noble path. "As it is truly" means without error. "I" refers to obtaining such a state of mind. "If there is" means if there is the cause of close acquisition. Condition

"What is meant by 'by what' is by what assisting condition? 'Proper attention' means attending to things as they truly are. 'Manifest realization' means being manifest with worldly knowledge. 'Therein, aging and death' refers to the state of name and form and the six sense sources, contact, and feeling that have arisen in the present, which is future aging and death, the state of the five aggregates. Why does the Bodhisattva first contemplate aging and death, and contemplate dependent origination, but not first contemplate ignorance? This order of contemplation is definitely established by Bodhisattvas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. There is no fault in the Bodhisattva first contemplating aging and death and then contemplating dependent origination. Also, in order to be consistent with complete realization, it is said that the Bodhisattva, having seen an old man, a sick man, and a corpse, became disgusted and went into the forest. Having seen them, he thought to himself: If there is what, then there is aging and death; by what condition does aging and death arise? He who attends to it properly is like this: if there is birth, then there is aging and death; by the condition of birth, aging and death arise. Thus, he manifestly realizes it as it truly is, and so on, extensively explained. Then, why is it that here, when it says 'by what condition,' some conditions are mentioned, but the cause is not mentioned? If only the cause were mentioned and not the condition, then at that time only the condition of the cause would be taken, and other conditions would not be taken. By saying 'condition,' the four conditions are taken. Or, by saying 'condition,' there is no difference from the cause. Thus, in the treatises of the Vaibhashikas, it is said: Venerable Ananda, therefore, the cause of aging and death is this, the condition is this, the basis is this, as it is said in the sutras: it is the one who is born. Thus it is said. 'Birth' refers to the state of consciousness that has arisen in the present, which is future birth, the state of the five aggregates. 'Existence' refers to the existence of beings that are born again.
