English

He spoke of "agreeing thus," and so on. The term "returning quickly" means that if the Khenpos and Acharyas reside here, we cannot reside elsewhere, so we must return quickly. The term "returning swiftly" means that out of love for our Khenpos and Acharyas, even when returning on the road, we must return steadfastly. The term "must be sought" means that the Acharya of the monastery must be sought. The term "a few attendants" means a small number of attendants. The term "with the entire body" means to change with actions of complete reverence. The term "from the right" means because of possessing the supreme activities of body, speech, and mind. The term "with the posture of an elephant" means that because the joints of the Tathagata's body are connected like dragons, like the chief of elephants, the entire body circumambulates from the right to the other side and observes. If asked, why not do it? Therefore, the Buddhas, knowing full well, pretend not to know, and so on. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are omniscient. Although it is only knowing, they pretend not to know for the sake of having meaning. They pretend not to know for the sake of worldly conventions, not because they do not know; this is the concluding statement. The term "knowing full well, yet pretending not to know" - if knowing full well, why pretend not to know? It is to avoid slander. If the Bhagavat, without questioning those monks who do not know faults and benefits, were to establish precepts or grant permissions, then those monks would slander the Bhagavat, saying: Regarding this matter, who is good, who is bad, what has been done that the Bhagavat establishes precepts or grants permissions? Therefore, knowing full well, he pretends not to know. The term "knowing but not questioning" means that if the benefit of others is not observed, even if knowing, one does not question, because there is no object to be tamed. The term "questioning in due time" means questioning those who are not distracted by activities, at a time when there is no confusion. The term "not questioning when overdue" means the opposite of the former.
