That which is called "the perception of suffering in impermanence" is that whatever is impermanent with outflows is suffering, which is the perception of the ground of the actual substance of meditation. That which is called "the perception of no-self in suffering" is that whatever is with outflows and is suffering, that has no autonomy, and to perceive it as such is the perception of the ground of the actual substance of meditation. That which is called "the perception of disagreeableness in food" is the perception of not being inclined towards food. That which is called "the perception of non-delight in all the world" is the perception of not being inclined towards the three worlds. That which is called "the perception of faults" is focused on the fault of complete transformation. That which is called "the perception of abandonment" is focused on stopping afflictions such as hatred and near afflictions. That which is called "the perception of detachment from desire" is focused on stopping desire. That which is called "the perception of cessation" is focused on abandoning forms, etc. That which is called "the perception of death" is focused on the cessation of the life's formations.

The perception of unattractiveness is the contemplation focused on a skeleton of bones. The perception of discoloration is the contemplation focused on a body that is decaying and turning blue. The perception of putrefaction is the contemplation focused on pus flowing out. The perception of swelling is the contemplation focused on swelling and bloating. The perception of being eaten by worms is the contemplation focused on being eaten by worms. The perception of being devoured is the contemplation focused on flesh being devoured. The perception of being smeared with blood is the contemplation focused on the appearance of being blood-red. The perception of being scattered is the contemplation focused on limbs being scattered. The perception of bone fragments is the contemplation focused on skulls and so on. The perception of individually contemplating emptiness is the contemplation that thinks of beings as empty of the nature of a permanent dharma and the nature of a person, and is the basis for the actual ground of meditative concentration. The first dhyana is with investigation and analysis. The second is without investigation and analysis. The third is without joy but with bliss. The fourth is without suffering and without bliss. Loving-kindness is the absence of hatred, arising from saying, "May all sentient beings be happy," which is the basis for the actual ground of meditative concentration, because it arises from friends. Compassion is the absence of hatred, arising from thinking, "Alas, sentient beings are suffering," which is the basis for the actual ground of meditative concentration. Joy is the mental pleasure, arising from thinking, "May all sentient beings be joyful," which is the basis for the actual ground of meditative concentration. Equanimity is the absence of desire, arising from thinking, "These are just sentient beings," which is the basis for the actual ground of meditative concentration. The sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, and the sphere of nothingness refer to infinite space. Infinite consciousness. There is not even a little bit of "mine," which is the four aggregates arising from combination. The sphere of neither perception nor non-perception refers to not engaging in the activity of perception.
