Firstly, it is the name for the value of eighty cowrie shells. Five mashakas have four hundred cowrie shells, and five mashakas are equal to one-fourth of a karshapana. "More than five mashakas" means more than the amount of five mashakas. Furthermore, if any bhikshu takes something ungranted that belongs to the category of stealing from others residing in a village or monastery, however much ungranted he takes, if the king or a great minister seizes him and says, "Hey, you person are a thief! A child! A fool! A robber!" Saying this, whether they kill, bind, or expel him, if the bhikshu takes something ungranted in this way, then that bhikshu is defeated and cannot abide. This is what is said in the Pratimoksha Sutra. In that, "any bhikshu" is the same as before. "Others" refers to men, women, and hermaphrodites. "Residing in a village" means residing within an enclosure, which is synonymous with "possessed." "Residing in a monastery" means residing outside an enclosure, which is synonymous with "unpossessed." "Ungranted" means not given by any man, woman, or hermaphrodite from there. "Belonging to the category of stealing" means that whatever is ungranted also belongs to the category of stealing. "Takes" means to take. "However much ungranted is taken" means five mashakas or more than five mashakas. "That" refers to that bhikshu. "King" means that if a woman is empowered to rule the country, then she is also a king, empowered from the head of the royal lineage. If the royal lineage, Brahmins, Vaishyas, and Shudras are empowered to rule the country, then he is also a king, empowered from the head of the royal lineage. "Great minister" refers to ministers other than the king, accountants, and those belonging to important positions who govern the country, living together through secret agreements, those who live relying on the king.
