It is for the sake of veneration and service, for the sake of veneration and service to the Dharma, and for the sake of completely protecting all the precepts that have been spoken. "Please accept me, O monk" means please understand. Similarly, repeating twice or three times means that, apart from the extra, the mantra recited for one's own purpose is three times, so here, taking refuge in the Three Jewels and vowing to be a layperson, therefore, giving the layperson's vows also requires reciting three times. Just as the first recitation was shown before, the second recitation and the third recitation should also be recited, this is the final conclusion. In the third sentence, it should be said "by the Acharya," meaning that reciting "Please accept me, O monk" is the first recitation, and the second recitation should also recite "Please accept me, O monk," while the third recitation should not say "monk," but should say "Please accept me, O Acharya." Why is that? Because at that time, one also becomes an Acharya, and the disciple also obtains the vows. That is to say, if the meaning of approaching a layperson, etc., is accomplished, then because one has become an Acharya, etc., therefore the third part of the final recitation is the accomplishment. The first recitation and the second recitation have neither accomplished the layperson nor become the Acharya, so one should recite "Please accept me, O monk." The third part of the final recitation has accomplished the layperson and has also become the Acharya, so therefore one should recite "Please accept me, O Acharya." In this way, when giving the layperson's vows, there are two boundaries of meaning, namely taking refuge and vowing to be a layperson. However, it can be divided into three parts, namely taking refuge is one part. "I will be a layperson until the end of my life" is the second part. "Please accept me, O Acharya" is the third part. So, how can one know when the third part of the final recitation is? After "I will be a layperson until the end of my life," the Acharya

The sound "kyis" before saying it is the word "before." Therefore, after that, one should say, "Please, Acharya, accept me," and one should not say, "Please, Bhikshu, accept me." For the upasampada of a novice monk and everything else, one should look at the ritual in this way. The meaning of "The Acharya should say, 'It is a means'" is that if someone says it for their own sake, they should say "It is a means" at the end of the request, because it is said (in the sutra). If someone says it only for their own sake, then the person who made the request should say "It is a means" at the end of having them recite the mantra. What comes from the means is the means, and your doing it that way is a means of accomplishing that thing, that is its meaning. The meaning of "The layperson should say 'Good'" is that after that, another person should say "Good" to him, because it is said (in the sutra). After the person who made the request says the word "It is a means," another person who is making the request should say "Good." Whatever is said as "It is a means" is good, that is the meaning of "It is a means." For ordination and so on, one should look at the ritual in this way for everything that someone says for their own sake. So, after having him commit to being a layperson, what should be done after that? After that, one should speak the precepts in the manner of making a commitment, because it is said (in the sutra). "After that" means immediately after saying the words of committing to being a layperson. "Speaking the precepts" means that speaking the precepts is speaking the precepts, which are the five precepts of the laypeople. It is taught like this: After the words, "Please, Acharya, accept me as a layperson for as long as I live," one should tell him what the basis of the precepts are. How should one say, "I will abandon this and this" in the manner of what should be done, or should one say, "I will not do this and this" in a negative way? Therefore, it is said that one should do it in the manner of making a commitment, one should do it in the manner of action. It should be done like this.

Et cetera. The term "noble" means being far removed from sinful and unwholesome dharmas. What are those? Therefore, it is said, "those arhats." Thus, how those noble arhats, with compassion for all sentient beings, and with the intention of focusing on and abandoning all sentient beings, until the end of their lives, abandon killing, and refrain from killing, just as I will do, this is the vow. "Killing" means intentionally thinking, severing and destroying the continuity of future moments of life. "Abandoning" means that at the time of properly taking vows, one mentally gives up killing living beings. "Refraining from killing" means that later, one also refrains with body, speech, and mind. "With this first branch" means abandoning killing, which is in accordance with attaining nirvana, because discipline is the cause of attaining nirvana. "Following" means that just as they learn the teachings with the intention of liberation, I also follow their teachings, this is the vow. "Practicing" means entering with the thought of liberation, and practicing without harming sentient beings. "Acting accordingly" means offering one's life and completely protecting the bases of training spoken by the Bhagavan. "Taking what is not given" means taking the property of others as one's own. "Sexual misconduct" means relying on condemned desires in places that are not permissible, with limbs that are not permissible, in places that are not permissible, and at times that are not permissible. "False speech" means making false statements in order to deceive. "Grain alcohol" means alcohol made from food. "Concocted alcohol" means alcohol made from substances. "Intoxication by both" means substances that cause intoxication. "Place of carelessness" refers to the characteristics of grain alcohol and concocted alcohol. The meaning of "carelessness" is decline, and non-virtue is increase. "Its place" means the cause of it.
