Therefore, becoming a preceptor does not change by repeating it twice. The so-called "holding" means that the words spoken by the reading preceptor are repeated, so it is a repetition. Speaking without the intention of reading is not reading itself, so it will not become a preceptor. The so-called "who makes one renounce" and "who makes one receive full ordination" means that if one person does both of these things, he is also a preceptor; if two people do both of these things, then both of them are preceptors. Sixth fascicle. The so-called "he" refers to the one who has not become the initial preceptor. Regarding "after asking about the obstructing dharmas," here the so-called "obstructing dharmas" are considered to be killing one's mother, etc., because they obstruct renunciation. There are two types of obstructing dharmas: some obstruct the arising of vows, such as killing one's mother, etc.; some obstruct beauty itself, such as having a severed hand, etc. Furthermore, there are two types of obstructing dharmas: some are aspects of views, such as whether one is a heretic, etc.; some are actions, such as whether one has been banished by the king, etc. All of these should be covered by the basis of renunciation itself, and all the subtle points, etc., that have not been mentioned should be asked in order. The so-called "after asking, holding" means that after asking, a distinction should be made for complete purification. If someone who wants to renounce comes to a certain monk and requests renunciation, then at that time, that monk should ask him about the obstructing dharmas. If those obstructions do not exist, then after that, for complete purification, as the initial preceptor, he should distinguish and promise, "I will make you renounce." The so-called "this word should be spoken" means that he should be made to speak this word. The so-called "venerable one" means calling. The so-called "please consider" means please pay attention. The so-called "I am called this name" means showing oneself.

English

"Starting from..." means starting from the time when one takes refuge in the Three Jewels and begins to take vows. "For as long as life lasts" means until one has not abandoned those of the same kind. "The best of bipeds" means that because it possesses the qualities of perfect benefit for oneself and others, it is superior to all sentient beings. "Buddha" refers to the non-learner, referring to becoming a Buddha, exhausting defilements, and knowing non-arising. "I take refuge" means acknowledging as a refuge in order to be completely protected from suffering. "The best of those free from desire" means that those who are free from desire through the worldly path obtain the undefiled path, and because it is imperishable, virtuous, and permanent, it is the best. "Dharma" refers to nirvana. "The best of assemblies" means that because the assemblies of those who have gone forth and those who have not gone forth are unwavering. It is the supreme field of merit, so it is the best. "Sangha" refers to the learners and non-learners, referring to becoming the Sangha. Thus, because vows do not arise without a firm intention for nirvana, taking refuge establishes a firm intention for nirvana. How so? "The best of bipeds, I take refuge in the Buddha," this indicates that one correctly relies on the one who shows the near path. "The best of those free from desire, I take refuge in the Dharma," this indicates that one correctly relies on the supreme nirvana of the Dharma. "The best of assemblies, I take refuge in the Sangha," this indicates that one correctly relies on the companions who go to the city of nirvana. Thus, taking refuge establishes a firm intention for nirvana, and one should know that a firm intention for nirvana will lead to obtaining vows. "I, for as long as life lasts, request the venerable one to accept me as a lay devotee," this is a commitment to becoming a lay devotee. So, a lay devotee refers to the Three Jewels.
