The term "sign" refers to a visible mark. The term "to make an image" means to observe. The act of establishing a boundary is done to observe the boundary. Therefore, if a sign is not erected, the boundary cannot be observed. Thus, it is said that the sign should be firmly maintained. The term "to speak" means to proclaim. The term "within" means up to that point. The term "to do the fourfold gathering" means to do the Uposatha and other acts together. Therefore, if the monks residing within that boundary do not gather at the place of action, or if their consent is not obtained, it will cause discord, and the act will not be established. The monks abide in comfort, which is for the accomplishment of the act and for being without fault. The term "except for villages and the vicinity of villages" means that within that great boundary, whatever villages and the vicinity of villages exist are not counted as part of the boundary, but should be excluded. Therefore, if villages and the vicinity of villages existed previously, they will not become part of the boundary, and even if they are built later, they will be excluded from the boundary. The term "reaching the monastery" means up to the edge of three and a half yojanas. The term "reaching the place" means reaching the vihara. The term "become sad" means become harmful. The term "within the great boundary, all monks should grant permission not to be separated from their robes" means that if permission not to be separated from their robes is granted within that boundary, then one can be inseparable from their robes. Merely establishing the boundary does not make one inseparable from their robes; that is not the meaning. The term "including the upper and lower garments" means including the upper and lower garments of the Dharma robe, which means not including the samghati. The term "acts done by a group of four" means confessing a grave offense among the offenses that lead to defeat. The term "acts done by a group of five" means confessing a grave offense among the offenses that lead to suspension. Some say that acts done by a group of four refer to the act of Uposatha. Acts done by a group of five refer to the act of Pavarana (end of retreat). The term "acts done by a group of ten" refers to fully receiving ordination in the central region.

Sa so. The so-called "small boundary" is the mandala. Therefore, the small boundary should be demarcated and a consensus should be reached with the mandala, as it is said. The so-called "first, the great boundary should be dissolved" means that if it is not tolerated in advance, others will not be able to invade the demarcated area. The so-called "creation" is the creation of customs such as singing and dancing. The so-called "firmly shaping the mark" means erecting sandalwood stakes in the four directions, or weaving ropes, or piling stones, or creating customs, etc., in order to allow the bhikkhus who know these firm marks to live in that place, or to allow the natives to first investigate and shape the marks. The so-called "the firm marks should be declared" means that after examining and establishing those marks, the Sangha should declare those firm marks. The so-called "thereafter, one bhikkhu should make a request and perform the karma" means that after declaring the firm marks in the four directions, the karma of demarcation should be performed. If asked: When demarcating the small boundary, should permission be given not to be separated from the Dharma robes? There is no definite answer to this. Because it is asked: Venerable, should the small boundary also be allowed not to be separated from the Dharma robes? If you wish, you should allow it, as it is said. The so-called "thereafter, the great boundary should be demarcated" means that if the small boundary is not demarcated in advance and the great boundary is demarcated, and then you want to demarcate the small boundary, you should first dissolve the previously demarcated great boundary and then demarcate the small boundary. If you want to demarcate the great boundary again after demarcating the small boundary, then the great boundary should also be demarcated thereafter. The so-called "thereafter, within the great boundary, all bhikkhus should be given permission not to be separated from the Dharma robes" means that after demarcating the small boundary, if the great boundary is demarcated later, then permission should also be given not to be separated from the Dharma robes. Venerable, can one karma performer change or increase the inside and outside of the boundary gate, including the boundary, with one request and one karma statement? In the occasion of answering, for the great boundary and the small boundary, what can one karma performer do with one request and one karma statement?
