Therefore, the so-called "General Summary of the Basis of Abiding" was taught, which gathers all the bases of abiding. The Blessed One taught two kinds of abiding: the abiding of tranquility and the abiding of accordance. Among these, because the abiding of tranquility is the main one and because there are fewer things to be expressed, the abiding of tranquility will be explained in detail first. Therefore, "discipline, non-Buddhists," and so on were taught, which should be connected to the verses of discipline such as "non-Buddhists" previously mentioned in the General Summary of the Basis of Abiding. "Day after day" means each day or earlier in the morning. "For the sake of seeing and serving" means for the sake of prostrating and following its teachings. "Satisfactory" means to remember the qualities correctly at all times in the mind. "Gardens" means the dwelling places of non-Buddhists. "Abiding" means to sit in yoga after placing the buttocks, that is, to cultivate meditation by sitting with the buttocks placed. "Affairs" means the requests of the Sangha, the request and two affairs, the request and four affairs, and virtuous deeds. "Abiding" means reciting the Pratimoksha Sutra and the abiding of non-Buddhists. "Exists" means doing. "Also does not praise" means also does not praise, because there would be faults. "Also does not turn back" means also does not repel, because there is no difference and it is uncertain. "Also to us" means in relation to the Dharma, it is a synonym for "to the monks." "Pray to establish" means to pray to arrange. "Should be done" means should be followed. "Yoga" means meditation, that is, mindfulness of the body and so on. "Up to the soles of the feet" means from above the two soles of the feet. "Down to the hair of the head" means down to the head marked by hair. "Up to the skin" means up to the bottom of the skin. "Between" means between the two widths of the water flow. Thus abiding.

The so-called "is" refers to always existing as the basis of impurity. The so-called "how to do" refers to the sudden accumulation of impurities through food and drink. To demonstrate this, it is said "regarding this body" and so on. These are shown first because they are places of attachment to the respective self-natures within, and to separately examine the faults of one's own body. The so-called "even when entering the field of activity" refers to even when going for alms. The so-called "delusion" refers to having power. The so-called "meeting together" refers to crossing or reaching. The so-called "falling down" refers to the entire body falling down. The so-called "lying prone" refers to half the body lying prone. The statement "entering the field of activity, one should not practice yoga" prohibits habitual actions, but for the purpose of taming, to demonstrate miraculous transformations and so on, manifesting single-pointedness of mind is not prohibited, because there is no fault arising there. The statement "do not meditate in any doorway or corridor" is prohibited because it is a place of manifest gathering. If the door is closed, then the manifest gathering itself in any doorway or corridor will be interrupted, so there is no fault in practicing yoga there. A dwelling is distracting, a monastery is a place for the fierce, and being near a village is a place for the boisterous, so meditation is prohibited in those places. The so-called "branch" refers to the top of a tree. The so-called "mat" refers to a square mat woven from bamboo and so on. The so-called "arbor" refers to that long frame. The so-called "eaves" refers to the eaves of a house. The so-called "retreat" refers to a place for meditation practice. The so-called "building a corridor between two houses" refers to building one house on one side and building a narrow corridor in between. The so-called "building a corridor of ten or twelve houses" refers to building five houses on one side and five houses on the other side, with a narrow corridor in between; building six houses on one side and six houses on the other side, with a narrow corridor in between. The second is the smallest size. Four or more, less than ten, is the medium size.
