Those ornaments were taken by the attendant Joyful One, thinking they were ownerless property, and those children said, "Our ornaments have been stolen," tearing the attendant Joyful One's clothes, reviling, and learning from that; the nuns who abide properly said, "The twelve classes of women did not establish this for our sake," desiring jewels and ornaments and so forth, precious things, and disparaging those of few desires, as before, up to the establishment of the Vinaya. Furthermore, if a nun takes with her own hand or causes another to take something like a precious object, it is a downfall. Except when it is inside a monastery or inside a dwelling. If there is a precious object or something like a precious object inside a monastery or inside a dwelling, that nun should think in her mind, "Whose is it? May I take it?" That is the time. The term "precious object" refers to ornaments and so forth, or gold and silver. The term "like a precious object" refers to bows, arrows, weapons, and so forth, and musical instruments. The term "except when it is inside a monastery or inside a dwelling" refers to when Lhamtshamma, while in Nyen, took off her ornaments and listened to the Dharma, forgetting that she had taken off her ornaments and placed them inside the temple, and then left; the attendant Joyful One thought, "Will someone else take it?" and took it, thinking, "The Blessed One will surely allow it." The Blessed One also allowed, "Inside a monastery or inside a dwelling, if there is something belonging to a precious object or something like a precious object, you should think in your mind, 'Whose is it? May I take it?'" Regarding this, if a nun touches or causes another to touch jewels and so forth, precious objects decorated with holes and marks, even a copper stake with a broken head, all of it is a downfall. If she takes or causes another to take something that is not pierced or marked, it is a wrong action. If she touches musical instruments such as bows and arrows, even a leech, it is a downfall. If she touches an instrument without strings or incomplete, or causes another to take it, it is a wrong action. If she touches a leather stake or a bow and arrow that children play with, it is a wrong action. If she touches relics of the Tathagata, such as bodily remains, it is a downfall. If it is for the sake of offering, there is no fault. The four downfalls are complete.
