The fifth of dividing the meaning into eight aspects, namely, explaining the fruit of individual liberation itself, has been completed. Now, to explain the necessity of purification, therefore: To protect each other's discipline, and for the sake of the flourishing of the teachings, because individual liberation is explained, the Sangha therefore performs purification. Thus it is said. Mutually, one extracts another from one's faults, thereby protecting discipline, and in order for the teachings of the Tathagatas to remain in the world for a long time and to flourish greatly, the Sangha gathers every half month, recites the Sutra of Individual Liberation, and performs purification according to the Dharma. This is the necessity of purification. Other explanations of the words are the same as those previously stated, so they are not repeated. The sixth of the meanings collected in individual liberation, divided into eight aspects, namely, the explanation of the necessity of purification, has been completed. Now, to explain how to protect discipline, therefore: For what reason is the Sutra explained, and for what reason is purification performed, that discipline should be protected, like the tip of a yak's tail. Thus it is said. Thus, the Sutra of Individual Liberation is explained, and purification is performed also for the sake of protecting discipline. Then, how should discipline be protected? Just like the snow mountain yak, when the fine hairs of its tail are caught by trees, etc., in order to protect it, it would rather not live than abandon it. Similarly, even for the slightest transgression, one should protect it without regard for life and body. That is the meaning. The seventh of the meanings collected in individual liberation, divided into eight aspects, namely, the explanation of how to protect discipline, has been completed. Now, in order to explain the last of the meanings collected in individual liberation, divided into eight aspects, namely, dedicating merit to the entire world, May all beings in the world, through the merit of explaining individual liberation, attain the state of the Sage. Thus it is said. This is composed by those who are good at collecting and summarizing, and finally dedicates the merit to all beings. Among them, the Sage refers to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The King of the Sages refers to the Tathagata.
