After eating, they performed great virtuous deeds, and the group of six asked, 'Why are you doing virtuous deeds especially today?' The group of seventeen said, 'We ate food after noon.' Because of this, the precepts were established. The group of twelve said, 'It is not for us.' So they ate food at any time, and ridiculed the nuns who desired little, and so on, the precepts were established as before. Furthermore, if a nun cooks or eats edible things after the time has passed, she commits a downfall. The 'nun' refers to the group of twelve, and others who are similar to them. 'After the time' refers to two kinds of time: after noon and before dawn. Regarding this, if a nun thinks of non-time as non-time, or has doubt, she commits one downfall for each. If she thinks of time as non-time, or has doubt, she commits one misdeed for each. 'Edible things' refers to flour, fruit, rice, food, and meat. 'Chewable things' refers to roots, stems, flowers, fruits, and leaves. The twenty-fifth downfall is complete. At that time, the teacher was in Shravasti. At that time, there was a monk named Black Dawn who always begged for food, and hid the leftover food, drying and hiding the moist food he obtained. When the place was damp and he could not beg for food, he would eat it. The nuns ridiculed him, and the Blessed One established the precepts because of this. The nuns who acted according to the Dharma did so. The group of twelve ate leftover food and so on, as well as molasses and so on. And they ridiculed the nuns who desired little, and so on, the precepts were established as before. Furthermore, if a nun cooks or eats chewable and edible things that have been left, she commits a downfall. 'Left' refers to having previously accepted it oneself, and placing it within the boundary of contact. If the time of morning or afternoon has passed, it is called molasses, and eating such food constitutes a downfall. 'Afternoon molasses' refers to things like brown sugar and honey. Regarding this, if a nun thinks of molasses as molasses, or has doubt, she commits one downfall for each. If she thinks of non-molasses as molasses, or has doubt, she commits a misdeed. If the bowl is contaminated by food and not washed, she commits a misdeed.

Similarly, if robes, pills, crooked keys, etc., fall into food, all are punishable acts. The twenty-sixth downfall ends. When the Teacher was in Shravasti, at that time, a monk named Black Monk was in Shravasti, and he had a very serious illness, and many people died and were taken to the cemetery. He ate the food placed on the pillows in the cemetery and became very strong, and always went to the cemetery. The people of Shravasti said, "This great Black Monk always goes to the cemetery and does not beg for alms in the village, and has become so strong, he must be eating human flesh." This was proclaimed everywhere. The local people wondered whether he was eating human flesh or not, so they placed a living person in the cemetery and placed five foods on the pillow. The great Black Monk went there to take the food, and a fox also thought of eating the food there and went there. The Black Monk saw it and ran away, and the person in the cemetery was frightened and stood up. The householders became reproachful, and the monks said, "Do not eat food without giving." The nuns did not know how to give, so the Blessed One taught five ways of giving, and until the precepts were established, it was the same as before. Furthermore, if a nun eats food that is swallowed from the mouth without being given, except for water and toothpicks, it is a downfall. "Not given" means not given, and giving is of five kinds: body giving to body, body touching giving to body touching, body touching giving to body not touching, body not touching giving to body not touching, and the fifth, with reproach. There are five places where fruits and other grains can be given: a large bed, a bed, a small bed, a stool, and a cushion. There are five ways to examine fruits and the like: fire, weapons, nails, parrots, and decay. There are also five kinds: stick, leaving, cutting, digging, and pulling out. If sentient beings such as horses and monkeys have the consciousness of giving, there is no fault in giving. To regard what is not given as not given, and to regard what is given as not given, these four cases should also be applied by analogy as before.
