The small (amount of food) is not accommodated. The medium is in between those two. Regarding this, if a Bhikshuni desires alms and the time allows, she should take three bowls at the door of one house. If she takes more than that, even if it's just one extra mouthful, it is a Patayantika offense. If she begs for two full large bowls, or one full medium bowl, it is also a Patayantika offense. If she begs for two full medium bowls, or one full large bowl and three (small bowls), it is also a Patayantika offense. Regarding this, the meaning of "that is the time" is that the two or three full bowls that are begged should be taken to the monastery and eaten together with the Bhikshunis. If this is not done, it is a Dukkata offense, this is the concluding statement. The twenty-first Patayantika offense is complete. The Teacher was in Shravasti when the group of six monks ate food and then casually ate leftover food, which was criticized by monks, laypeople, and Brahmins. Therefore, the Bhagavan established the precepts, and the Bhikshunis who acted according to the Dharma also followed them. The group of twelve Bhikshunis ate food and then casually ate leftover food, (causing) the diligent Bhikshunis to be criticized, (the Bhagavan) established the Vinaya precepts, the same as before. Furthermore, if a Bhikshuni eats or chews food after having finished eating and abandoning (the food) without considering it as leftover, she commits a Patayantika offense. "Abandoning" means that after eating food, one abandons it with the thought "enough." "Without considering it as leftover" means not considering it as leftover food eaten by others. Because leftover food is not blameworthy, it is allowed to be eaten. However, because one wants to eat after abandoning the food, one should know that this is a punishment. "Eating" and "chewing" refer to the five kinds of food and the five kinds of chewable food. Regarding this, if Bhikshunis eat and abandon (food) after eating, and then after abandoning the proper conduct, they eat food and chewable food without considering it as leftover, they commit a Patayantika offense. If they eat without abandoning the proper conduct, they commit a Dukkata offense. For food that has not been considered as leftover, there is one Patayantika offense each for those who think it has not been considered as leftover and those who are doubtful. For food that has been considered as leftover, there is one Dukkata offense each for those who perceive it as not having been considered as leftover and those who are doubtful. If one obtains rare fruits or a sick person eats food that has not been considered as leftover, there is no offense. The twenty-second Patayantika offense is complete. The Teacher was in Shravasti when, at that time, a Bhikshuni was close to a
