Just as taming makes one docile, for those nuns who are in their prime, unrestrained, and unable to restrain their minds, if they are tamed and disciplined with the iron hook of individual liberation, their minds will become capable and they will be freed from the faults of youth. Therefore, this individual liberation is referred to as the sound of the iron hook. The time of youth is defined as the period from when one is able to engage in desire until the age of thirty. To explain the cause of abandoning the lower realms and attaining higher realms, it is said: This is the raft of liberation from the deep abyss of bad migrations. This is definitely the ladder and bridge to go to good migrations. It is said so. The bad migrations are three: sentient hell, animals and hungry ghosts. Samsara means taking the aggregates again and again in those three bad migrations. Deep means two kinds: very scary and difficult to cross. The very scary ones are the fruits of bad migrations, that is, the beings born in the hot, cold, near, and near-near hells suffer the fear of being cut and killed, etc.; animals are foolish and ignorant, the fear of cannibalism, etc.; hungry ghosts are afraid of being tormented by hunger and thirst. Difficult to cross is because those bad migrations are like the sea. The raft of liberation is a metaphor, just as boats and rafts can take people to the other side when crossing the sea, those who want to get rid of the suffering of those three bad migrations like the sea, if they practice as it arises from this individual liberation, they will be freed from those sufferings, so it is said to be like a raft. The so-called good migration refers to going to a place of goodness and happiness, that is, higher life, referring to the migration of gods and humans. The ladder and bridge to go means the ladder and bridge to go to the place of gods and humans, just as the river can be crossed by the ladder and bridge, if you act like it comes from this individual liberation, which is definitely the ladder and bridge of gods and humans, you will experience the happiness of gods and humans. Certainty is an undeniable word. Abandoning defilements

It is taught as showing the cause of passing into sorrow. Therefore, it is said: This is the path that destroys afflictions, It is the supreme guide of the Victorious One, This is the entrance to the city of liberation, It abides like the foundation of a staircase. This is said. This is, namely, this individual liberation. Afflictions are twofold: those to be abandoned by seeing and those to be abandoned by meditation, namely eighty-eight and ten. In the Mahayana treatises, it is explained that the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing and meditation are eighty-two and sixteen. The path of destruction is the path that abandons and destroys afflictions, and it is shown that this is individual liberation. The supreme guide of the king is a metaphor. Just as when a king attacks another enemy, he is first led by a surveyor, and then the army destroys him, similarly, if one wants to destroy the afflictions that are like enemies, one must first rely on discipline, and then abandon afflictions by the noble path. The path is shown as being like a king, and the supreme guide of that path is said to be individual liberation. Entering the city of liberation means entering the city of peace. It abides like the foundation of a staircase. Just as when climbing to the top of a tall city, one relies on a ladder, and the ladder must also rely on the foundation, similarly, those who wish to enter the city of peace must also rely on this individual liberation, like the foundation of a staircase. The noble path is shown as a staircase, and this individual liberation is shown to be like its foundation. Because it is relied upon as being shown to be like a teacher, if I pass into sorrow, this is also your teacher, and the self-born one also diligently, the monks also manifestly praised. Thus it is said. This is the teacher, when the teacher is approaching complete and utter peace, the monks such as Ananda asked: After the Blessed One passes into sorrow, how shall we be together with the monks who destroy the Sangha and the wicked...
