The six are: a monk intends to lie, thinking: I will lie, intending in his mind; when lying, thinking: I am lying; after speaking, thinking: I have lied; and the three rootless seeing, hearing, and doubt, making six. The five are: the five mentioned at the beginning. The four are: referring to the first four. The three are: referring to any of the third and second of the six mentioned above. The two are: when lying, thinking: I will lie; after lying, again thinking: I have lied. There is no such thing as just one lie. Furthermore, there are five kinds of lies: the lie of Parajika is merely a false statement. The lie of Sanghavasesa is falsely accusing someone of committing Parajika without basis. The lie of Thullaccaya is when a Bhikkhuni declares what is not Dharma as Dharma, and what is Dharma as not Dharma, in the Sangha. The lie of Dukkata is when one wants to receive the Pratimoksha vows, when asked if they abide in purity, they remain silent even though they are not pure. Apart from these four, all other lies will result in a downfall. A downfall refers to bad realms and bad destinies.

Falling into hell, suffering the torment of burning and cooking. If this offense is not confessed, or not confessed individually, it obstructs virtuous Dharma, hence it is called a downfall. What is the offense? In short: forgetting, doubt, and inverted perceptions. If one has not seen, not heard, not known, not cognized, but says "I have seen, heard, known, cognized," then each word becomes a downfall. If one has seen but forgets, concealing the perception, and says "I have seen, and I have not forgotten," or says "I have heard, I have known, I have cognized," then each word becomes a downfall. If one has seen but doubts, or has heard and cognized but doubts, saying "What I saw and cognized does not exist," then each word becomes a downfall. Though seeing, one develops the perception of not seeing; though cognizing, one develops the perception of not cognizing, thus concealing the perception, but saying "I have seen, I have cognized," then each word becomes a downfall. Likewise, these four aspects can be interchanged. Saying "seeing" as "knowing," or forgetting what was seen, if knowing is not forgotten, saying "I have not forgotten what I saw, but I have forgotten what I know," then each word becomes a downfall. Likewise, doubt and inverted perceptions should also be interchanged and spoken. The first downfall is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti. At that time, twelve groups of nuns spoke of the faults of people to the nuns, calling the noble mother "blind," "hunchbacked," "deceitful," and "lame," causing the nuns to be depressed and ashamed, abandoning recitation and mindfulness, becoming unhappy, and mocking the unimportant nuns. They reported this to the teacher, and thus the precepts were established. Speaking of the faults of people is a downfall. Speaking of the faults of people includes eight things: lineage, craft, occupation, appearance, illness, downfall, and afflictions. Among these, the fault of lineage refers to saying, if one is ordained from the royal lineage, Brahmin lineage, Vaishya lineage, or Shudra lineage, "Where is there a Shramana? Where is there Brahmacharya?"
