When the price is low in a certain place, then buy from there and transport it. How to sell it? When the price becomes low in the city and the price is high in the countryside, then sell it there. Similarly, buy in a good year and sell in a famine year. Brahmins and householders will ridicule and make unpleasant noises. When this happens, report it to the Teacher, and the Teacher said to the group of twelve, "It is not good for you to do such a thing, when will you be at ease?" After saying this, the monks reported, "We did not do that." Then they were blamed in various ways and the precepts were established. Furthermore, if a bhikkhuni buys and sells in various ways, that is a nissaggiya pacittiya. The meaning of various ways is to buy and sell in many ways. To do means to do it that way. The others are the same as above. What kind of offense is that? If one buys for profit and sells for profit, then at the time of buying, one commits a dukkata, and at the time of selling, one commits a nissaggiya pacittiya. If one buys not for profit and sells not for profit, there is no offense. If one buys for profit and sells not for profit, then at the time of buying, one commits a dukkata. There is no offense in selling. If one buys not for profit and sells for profit, then at the time of buying, there is no offense. At the time of selling, one commits a nissaggiya pacittiya. There is no offense in thinking of transporting it to another place and repaying the common debt. The thirteenth nissaggiya pacittiya is completed. The Teacher came to stay in Kosambi. At that time, Thullananda entered the city for alms early in the morning. At that time, a boy selling incense had a round, completely satisfactory, and usable bowl. Thullananda saw it and asked, "Whose is this?" The boy selling incense said, "This is mine." Thullananda said, "Since that is so, why don't you give it to me?" The boy said, "If it is measured by value, it is okay. I have not heard of anyone who gets a golden bowl for an earthen bowl, what is there to regret? Don't fail, come and see." The boy did not give the bowl. A merchant came there and paid homage. Thullananda said, "What good is it for your hands to be empty?" The merchant bought the bowl for sixty karshapanas and offered it to Thullananda. Then he made a verse of offering and gave it to the incense seller.

Look at how much karshapanas this noble person has obtained! Because of your miserliness, you will be reborn as a hungry ghost with a wet genitals. After saying this, he went to the summer retreat room, and the bowl was broken. Then, he reported this matter to the Buddha, and the Buddha established a precept, saying: If a bhikkhuni's bowl does not have five patches, and she can continue to use it, but she seeks another bowl because she wants a better one, then she must abandon it. Thus, the precept was established. A bhikkhuni's alms bowl was leaking, and bees gathered, and flies surrounded her, and the Holy Mother rebuked her, saying: Look at how much work you have done for the community! The unprotected benefactor saw it, and the Holy Mother said: What is this that turns good into bad? The bhikkhuni said: Benefactor, what bad thing have I done? Then why are you surrounded by flies as you walk? My bowl is leaking. Why don't you patch it? The Buddha did not allow them to seek other bowls when they had usable bowls. Then, they reported this matter to the Buddha, and the Buddha instructed: Patch the leaking bowl with patches! Use glue and nails, like the teeth of a turtle, flat, and iron filings. Mix iron rust with ghee and burn it in the fire. Thus, it was said. Then, a bhikkhuni's bowl was broken into five pieces, and she sewed it together with thread, making it usable, and went to beg for alms. After eating, she would untie the thread again, make it usable, and put it away, which became an obstacle to virtuous deeds. Then, they reported this matter to the Buddha, and the Buddha instructed: The former was the rule, this is the permission. Thus, the precept was established. If a bhikkhuni's bowl has more than five patches, and she can still make it usable, but she seeks a new bowl because she wants a better one, then she must abandon the bowl once it is made. That bhikkhuni distributed the bowl to the bhikkhuni sangha, and whoever's bowl was the most worn out in the bhikkhuni sangha, she would say to that bhikkhuni: You, bhikkhuni, do not bless this bowl, do not transfer it, do not give it to others, but slowly...
