If one thinks of them as relatives, or doubts whether they are relatives and takes them, it is a downfall. If one thinks of relatives as non-relatives, or doubts whether they are relatives and takes them, it is a minor offense. If it belongs to the poor among the Sangha, or is given with sweet words, or is given for ordination, or is robbed by thieves, or is given for a low price, or is exchanged and given, or is famous, or is offered without attachment to those with great merit, saying, "For the sake of the compassion of the Holy Mother," and leaves, there is no downfall. The fifth relinquishing downfall is complete. The Teacher was dwelling in Shravasti. Then, Spom-ga-mo entered for alms in the morning. A householder went to that house, and his wife, adorned with ornaments, was standing at the door. When Spom-ga-mo saw her, she prostrated and Spom-ga-mo taught the Dharma. She gave birth to faith and said, "Please offer a piece of cloth." Spom-ga-mo said to her, "Who knows if one will die tomorrow? One should practice diligently today. The great army of the Lord of Death is not my friend." From saying that, she took the upper garment of the householder's wife, spoke the words of offering, and left. The Brahmins and householders were not pleased with the alms given by the Bhikshuni, and they complained, "Her clothes were robbed," and they grumbled unpleasantly. When the Teacher heard of this, he established the place of learning. Again, if a Bhikshuni takes clothes from a householder who is not a relative or the wife of a householder, it is a relinquishing downfall. Many Bhikshunis were robbed by thieves while wandering in the countryside. They thought, "The Teacher does not allow begging from householders who are not relatives."

Such as this, the robes of the bhikkhunis being robbed, the robes being lost, the robes being burned, the robes being carried away by the wind, and the robes being carried away by the water, these are the circumstances. "Householder" means a married man. "Wife" means a woman. "Not exactly the same" means not like a mother. "Robes" means wool and linen, etc. "Except for the circumstances" means using the circumstances, i.e., being carried away by thieves, which means being robbed by thieves or deceitful people. "Lost" means lost or forgotten. "Burned and carried away by the wind," and "carried away by the water" mean exactly those situations. The situations that lead to an offense involve value, length, and color. Regarding value, if one asks for the value of five karshapanas and then only gives five karshapanas, it is an offense when asking. If one obtains it, it is a nissaggiya pacittiya. Other karshapanas are similarly applied to asking for two. If one asks for the value of five karshapanas and then obtains five karshapanas, it is an offense when asking. There is no offense in obtaining more. If one asks for blue and then obtains blue, it is an offense when asking. If one obtains it, it is a nissaggiya pacittiya. Just as with blue, other colors, thick and thin, are also the same. If one asks for a blue robe and then obtains a yellow one, it is an offense when asking, but there is no offense in obtaining it. The same applies to length. If one asks for five cubits of length and then obtains more length, it is an offense when asking. There is no offense in obtaining more. If one does not ask for headscarves and cloth, and then obtains a whole bolt of cloth or a large piece of cloth, there is no offense. The sixth chapter on nissaggiya ends. The Teacher was dwelling in Shravasti (Sanskrit: Śrāvastī). Then, many bhikkhunis were robbed by thieves. Mahaprajapati (Sanskrit: Mahāprajāpatī) said to them: If the Teacher allows bhikkhunis to beg for robes because they have been robbed by thieves, why don't you beg? They said: We cannot. Mahaprajapati said: Then I will beg for you. They said: If that is so, then beg. So, Mahaprajapati preached the Dharma to Brahmins and householders for them, and begged for many robes, taking the good ones for herself and giving the bad ones to the bhikkhunis. Those bhikkhunis were mending old robes, and the other bhikkhunis saw them and said: You have obtained so many robes, why are you mending old robes? Bhikkhu
