"Increasing merit" refers to abandoning greed. Because generosity is the antidote to greed. Practicing generosity can free one from the defilement of stinginess and increase the mind of giving. It is for the sake of increasing merit. "Protection prevents enemies, etc., from changing" refers to pacifying anger. Because protection is the antidote to anger. Protecting the three doors of body, speech, and mind, even if others slander, become angry, or insult, or strike with hands, sticks, wooden staffs, or weapons, one thinks that it is not permissible if it causes obstacles for me, therefore, one does not generate anger in the heart, nor does one speak evil words. Focusing on this, one abides spreading loving-kindness to all places. Based on this, in this life, the hatred in one's own and others' continuums is pacified, and in the next life, one will be reborn in a world without harm. Hatred will not increase, and competitors will not increase. People will be happy to see it. Because hatred brings enemies, etc. "Possessing virtue abandons sin" refers to abandoning ignorance and pride. Among them, the so-called "possessing virtue" refers to the superior mind. Because the habits of ignorance and pride are subtle and difficult to abandon, they are abandoned with the superior mind. The so-called "abandoning sin" refers to the habits of ignorance and pride being called sin. These two also rely on the superior mind to generate superior wisdom. At the time of realizing the truth, one can abandon these two causes of sin that lead to falling into the lower realms. The so-called "showing the antidote to the afflictions to be abandoned by the meditation of the two upper realms" refers to "Nirvana is attained because afflictions are exhausted." This refers to the afflictions to be abandoned by the meditation of the form and formless realms, namely, greed, ignorance, and pride, each realm having three, totaling six that can be abandoned. That is, the afflictions to be abandoned by the meditation of the two upper realms are completely severed by the noble path, thereby attaining the with-remainder and without-remainder

It is in order to transcend suffering in the realm of transcendence of suffering. In this very Fortunate Aeon, when beings live to be a hundred years old, the Buddha Shakyamuni appeared in the world. During the time of this teacher, most of the Shravaka disciples have many defilements, therefore they accumulate sins, and are satisfied with just a little bit of virtue, thinking that they can achieve great results with that. Because they pursue desires too eagerly and cannot keep their minds at peace, they should avoid those faults. Furthermore, because other afflictions will arise for those Shravaka disciples, for twelve years, the Pratimoksha Sutra was taught, starting from "Do not do all evil deeds," up to "One will obtain the path spoken by the righteous." This can also be divided into three aspects: abandoning sins, showing the method of abandoning sins, and showing the method for those who enter this path to not lose mindfulness. Among them, what is called abandoning sins is: "Do not do all evil deeds, practice perfect virtue, subdue your own mind, this is the teaching of the Buddha." This can also be divided into three aspects: the antidote to accumulating sins, the antidote to being satisfied with just a little bit of virtue and thinking that one can obtain great results, and the antidote to pursuing desires too eagerly and not being able to keep one's mind at peace. These three correspond to the first three lines of the verse respectively. Among them, the first line, "Do not do all evil deeds," means that one should abandon the three sins of the body. "Practice perfect virtue," means that one should abandon the four sins of speech. "Subdue your own mind," means that in order to abandon the three sins of the mind, one should focus on higher mind. "This is the teaching of the Buddha," means that one should practice in this way. What is called showing the method of abandoning sins is: "Guarding the body is good, guarding speech is good, guarding the mind is good, guarding is good in all places. A Bhikshu who is completely guarded will be completely liberated from all suffering." This means that one should abandon the sins of body, speech, and mind mentioned earlier, and possess discipline.
