Said. Renunciation that harms others, or harms others, is not a Shramana. Thus it is said. This is further divided into three types: showing the antidote to diligent effort, and the antidote to faith in its fruit, and showing the antidote to faith in showing asceticism to others. Among them, showing the antidote to diligent effort is: Patience is the supreme asceticism, patience is. Thus it is said. Like the heretics, afflicting and tormenting the body is not the supreme asceticism. Because afflicting the mind, these two are extremely difficult, the supreme asceticism is patience of the mind, that is, patience of understanding the Dharma. Showing the antidote to faith in the fruit of that asceticism is: The Buddha said that Nirvana is supreme. Thus it is said. It means that asceticism that harms the body cannot lead to liberation from suffering, and the meaning of patience in understanding the Dharma is called Nirvana. Because relying on it, one can be liberated from suffering. Therefore, it should be known that with the wisdom of understanding the Dharma, one can attain liberation from suffering, not through asceticism. Showing the antidote to faith in showing asceticism to others is: Renunciation that harms others, or harms others, is not a Shramana. Thus it is said. Among them, what is called renunciation is renunciation from home to homelessness. What is called harming others is causing others to engage in asceticism that afflicts the body and is meaningless, and causing suffering, hence it is called harming others. Harming others is not a Shramana. Thus it is said. It means causing others to engage in wrong practices and causing them to suffer, because they are not true Shramanas. What is called Shramana means practicing to pacify sins and being well-disciplined, hence it is called Shramana. In reality, it refers to the noble renunciates and those who follow them. Therefore, it should be known that abandoning the two extremes of suffering and pleasure, with the wisdom of understanding the Dharma, one can be liberated from suffering, not through asceticism. Ninety-one kalpas ago, when the lifespan of beings was ten thousand years, a Buddha named Crowned One appeared in the world, the teacher.

During that time, most of the Shravakas aspired to be reborn in the heavens and were devoted to Brahmacharya. Because the heavens themselves are prone to falling into lower realms, as an antidote to prevent falling into lower realms, (it is said in the scriptures:) "Those with eyes are like a cliff, because there is something to be obtained, wise people live in this world, and should completely abandon all sins." Just as a person with eyes would avoid a cliff and unsafe roads, those who possess the eye of wisdom should also abandon the heavens, which are like a cliff, and enter the city of Nirvana, which is the place to be attained. Therefore, (it is said in the scriptures:) "Those with eyes are like a cliff, because there is something to be obtained." Here, wisdom is like the eye. "Having" means obtaining. The word "like" has two interpretations: wisdom is like the eye, so it is said to be like a person with eyes. Another interpretation is that the heavens are also like a cliff. "Wise person" refers to one who is skilled in means. "Living" means being with life. "This world" is as mentioned before. "Here" means in the present. "Should completely abandon all sins" means turning back from desiring the heavens, because attachment to the heavens, which has sin as its origin, is not abandoning sins. Therefore, it is said in the scriptures that those who possess the eye of correct wisdom should abandon the heavens, which are like a cliff, with skillful means. Thirty-one kalpas ago, when the lifespan of beings could reach sixty thousand years, a Buddha named "Protecting All" appeared in the world. During the time of that teacher, the Shravakas were content with merely upholding the precepts, and began to speak ill of others, defaming them with words and harming them with their minds. Merely being content with upholding the precepts oneself does not lead to attaining the fruit of a Shramana. Speaking ill of and harming others is also not the conduct of virtuous people. As an antidote to these, (the Buddha) said, "One should not defame, one should not harm," and so on. This can also be divided into three: the antidote to verbal defamation, and the mind
