DTG156 0001.Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra for Bhikshunis of the Mulasarvastivada School།.g2.0f

English

Having said that, the Pearl Woman said to them: If you do not wish to go, please tell me. They agreed to go, and then wrote a letter to the Blessed One, (in which they said:) Gods and non-gods prostrate to you, you have completely escaped the fear of birth and old age, your great fame is known everywhere, you are the incomparable lord of nectar. After that, those merchants took the letter and presented it to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Merchants, when you go to the island of Simhala, please tell me. They agreed to go. The Blessed One drew a picture of his own height, and below the picture he wrote refuge in the Three Jewels, and the five precepts, and the interdependent origination that is in accordance with the law, and the interdependent origination that is not in accordance with the law, and the eightfold noble path, and above he wrote a verse: One should begin and strive, until one finally escapes suffering. After writing it, he sent it. After that, the Pearl Woman asked the merchants: What is this? They told her in detail one by one. The Pearl Woman began to contemplate the twelve links of interdependent origination, and without repeating it three times, she realized the truth, and said in verse: Although the Buddha is far away, he brightens the eyes with wisdom, Whose eyes are so bright? I prostrate to that skilled physician. Although the Buddha is far away, he can eradicate the thorns of wrong views from the root, You are the one who removes the thorns, I prostrate to that skilled physician. After saying this, she said to the merchants: When you go, please tell me. They agreed.

Having destroyed the peak of viewing the many aggregates of destruction accumulated by severance with the wisdom vajra, having manifested the fruit of entering the stream. Venerable one, I have crossed over! I have manifestly crossed over! Now I go for refuge to the Bhagavan, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks. I beseech you to accept me as a female lay follower until the end of my life. Please take these three measures of pearls and offer them to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Then, they beseeched the Bhagavan in that manner and offered the pearls. The Bhagavan said to Ananda: Ananda, did you see the female servant of the Shakya great name, Kurva, who listened to the Dharma from me and left, and was killed by a cow on the road? Venerable one, I saw her. She passed away with faith in me, and was born as the daughter of the king of Simhala, and was named Pearl Mother. Having seen the truth, she offered this. For this, with the share of the Buddha's body, make a small statue in the clean room. The share of the Dharma is for those who hold the Dharma. The Sangha should clothe the assembled Sangha. The Teacher said that whatever is the share of the Dharma is for those who hold the Dharma. At that time, those who held the Sutras said, "We are the holders of all the Sutras of the Bhagavan, therefore this gain is our power." Those who held the Vinaya said, "We are the guardians of the inner treasury of the Bhagavan, because we hold all the Vinaya, therefore this gain is our power." Those who held the Matrika said, "We hold the own and common characteristics of the Sutras and Vinaya, therefore this gain is our power." Therefore, those who held the Sutras, Vinaya, and Matrika, at that time fought, reviled, resented, and quarreled. The Bhagavan said: Monks, do not fight and revile! Do not resent and quarrel! Monks, there are four kinds of disputes: dispute from speaking discordantly, dispute from not having instruction, dispute from offenses, and dispute from actions. This is the basis of the discussion. That which is called dispute for the sake of speaking discordantly is: If someone gains some material possessions from speaking the Dharma, some say that this was offered for the sake of the Dharma,

Is it a dispute over property, or a dispute over whether the one who speaks the Dharma is superior to the one who teaches the Dharma, or a dispute arising from disagreements in the teachings of the Dharma, etc.? A dispute without instruction refers to a pure and innocent person who is slandered with unreasonable words, leading the Khenpo and Acharya not to give instructions such as reading, resulting in a dispute, just like a strong man being insulted by a wealthy person and a friend. A dispute arising from offenses refers to a bhikkhu who has committed the five types of downfall being discussed but not admitting or repenting, or a dispute arising from others discussing the offenses of others. A dispute arising from actions refers to a dispute arising when performing any of the one hundred and one types of actions, such as making requests. This is called the definition of disputes. Among them, the causes of disputes arising from disagreements in speech are twenty, namely the six roots of quarreling and the fourteen things of discord. Among them, the six roots of quarreling are: being angry and bearing grudges, concealing and being annoyed, being jealous and stingy, being hypocritical and deceitful, not knowing shame and not being cautious, delighting in evil and being arrogant with wrong views. The fourteen things of discord are: saying it is Dharma, saying it is not Dharma, similarly, saying it is discipline, saying it is not discipline, it is an offense, it is not an offense, it is a heavy offense, it is a light offense, remaining, not remaining, should be praised, should be confessed, transgressing the discipline, will be abusive. All disputes arising from disagreements in speech are these six and fourteen. Because they arise from these, they are called causes. The cause of a dispute without instruction is only one, namely not giving instruction. That is to say, do not give instruction to the Sangha, not giving instruction, placing without giving instruction. Therefore, fighting and scolding, bearing grudges and quarreling, this is the cause of a dispute without instruction, placing without giving instruction.
