Let (them) make needle cases. The twelve groups of nuns also commissioned the making of many needle cases without paying, and as a result, ivory, bone, and horn were used up, and they became poor. Then the naked heretics mocked, saying, 'When these people liked us, they had perfect resources, but now they like the Shakya son bhikkhu, and they don't even have food.' They said these unpleasant words. The nuns reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the twelve groups were criticized a lot. As before, until the training place for learning the Vinaya was established. Also, if any nun has someone use an ivory, bone, or horn needle case and breaks it, she commits a Patita. Also, any nun, this "any" is the same as the twelve groups, and there are others. "Ivory, bone, and horn" are actually used up, and "needle case" has two types, namely, with a lid and with a cover. "Make" means oneself or having someone else do it. "Broke" means that the thing was previously allowed, but now it is a Patita, and one should confess. This is a summary word. "Patita" is the same as before. So, what is a Patita? If a nun makes or has someone make a needle case out of ivory, bone, or horn, she commits a Patita in all cases. When confessing in front of someone, that person should also ask, 'Did you break something?' If one confesses without asking, both have faults, and the Patita will not be confessed away. Releasing without grabbing, grabbing but not hiding, doing for others, all have faults. Getting something done and enjoying something done, there is no fault. There are four types of needle cases, allowed to be said, namely copper, brass, conch, and iron. For beginners, etc., there is no fault. The sixty-eighth Patita is completed. The event took place in Shravasti. A bhikkhu traveled to Shravasti, and after washing his feet, sat on a low bed. In the spring, the weather was hot, and a venomous snake was also forced by the heat and wanted to cool off, so it slept next to the low bed where the bhikkhu washed his feet. The bhikkhu was also tired from the road, his body was swaying, and his head was drooping. His body was bending repeatedly, and the snake thought, 'This guy is going to harm me.' So it bit the bhikkhu's ankle, and the bhikkhu died as a result. The bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One, and from then on, the bed...

The Blessed One instructed, "Do not sleep on a bed with short legs." The nuns of the Twelve Divisions made bed legs twelve cubits high and used ladders to sleep on them. The nuns reported this to the Buddha, and the precept was established. If the nuns' Sangha makes a bed or a small bed, except for the case where the legs are inserted into holes, make it to the measure of eight fingers of the Sugata. If it is made longer than that, it must be cut off, and then the offense of downfall must be confessed. The rest is easy to understand, so I will not explain it. "Make it to the measure of eight fingers" means that the Buddha's finger is not the cubit measure of an ordinary person. "Cut off" means to cut off the excess and then confess the offense of downfall. "Offense of downfall" means the same as before. So, what is the offense of downfall? If a nun exceeds the measure of eight fingers of the Sugata by even a little, it will completely constitute an offense of downfall. When confessing to someone, ask if they have cut off the excess. If you confess without asking, both are at fault, and the offense of downfall will not be confessed, so you must confess again. The sixty-ninth offense of downfall is complete. When the Buddha was in Shravasti, the beds that the Venerable Nanda had previously obtained were taken away by elderly monks, and it was time to allocate bedding again. Fearing that others would take his bed, he spread cotton wool on it. Then an elderly monk came and asked the Venerable Nanda, "Whose bed is this?" He replied, "This is my cotton wool." Another monk said, "The cotton wool belongs to the Venerable Nanda, but the bed belongs to the Sangha." The Venerable Nanda became angry, gathered up the cotton wool, and scattered a little on top. That monk, without examining it carefully, slept on it, and when he woke up in the morning, his whole body was covered with cotton wool and had turned gray. The monks said, "Were you sleeping in a rice field?" He explained in detail what had happened. The monks reported this to the Buddha, and the precept was established. The Twelve Divisions said, "This precept has not been established for the nuns." Because the nuns were spreading cotton wool on the Sangha's beds and small beds, the matter was small, so the nuns reported to the Buddha, and the place for learning in the Vinaya was explained. Furthermore, if a nun spreads cotton wool on the Sangha's bed or small bed, or has someone spread it, she must gather it up and then confess the offense of downfall. The rest is easy to understand, so I will not explain it.
