One should think, 'This is completely separated and transformed,' and one should think, 'This is going away separately,' and then eat. One should maintain mindfulness and not let the mind wander, and with regard to food, one should have the perception of medicine, the perception of a sick person, the thought of relying on others, the thought of retaliation, and the thought of dependent origination. Having manifested these thoughts, one should eat. One should manifest the mindfulness of eating together, eating repeatedly, and being content. This is called the practice of food. What is the practice of eating? When a monk eats food, whether it is porridge or soup, when the time is announced or the gavel is struck, one should come quickly. One should sit down quickly. One should walk with awareness. One should sit with awareness. One should eat with awareness. One should maintain mindfulness and not let the mind wander, be well-dressed, have proper conduct, be very careful and highly secluded, lower the voice, not let the eyes wander, look at the distance of the yoke, with respect, with humility, with fear, and thinking of oneself as being controlled by others, with the thought of sweeping the floor, for the elders, the middle ones, and the newly learned monks, manifest the mind of loving-kindness and compassion, and the thoughts of father, son, and brother. One should be skilled at sitting on the seat, and skilled at eating food. This is called the practice of eating. What is the practice of giving food? When a monk receives food, he should not return it, and he should not give it away casually. To whom should the food be given? It should be given to the mother, father, brothers, and sisters. It should be given to relatives. It should also be given to the laypeople who come to the monastery. It should also be given to the helpers, and it should also be given to the non-helpers. It should also be given to the sick, those touched by desire, and those who are related. If a pregnant woman comes, one should also maintain mindfulness and give. One should also give a mouthful of food to animals. It should also be given to those who want to be ordained. The food should be divided into small pieces and made into leftovers to give. This is called the practice of giving food. What is the practice of alms?

应以恭敬之心接受乞食。应彻底地接受。不要与过多相等。不要与过少相等。应以正知,以及忆念安住,以及心不散乱,以及不放逸,以及以多少为满足,就接受多少。这被称为乞食的行为。什么是乞食的行为呢?乞食的比丘应以正知进入。以正知站立。忆念安住,以及心不散乱,以及端庄和行为稳重,以及非常约束,以及非常遮蔽,以及不发出声音,以及眼睛不游移,以及看轭木的长度,以及调伏诸根,以及心不外散,以及前后之想,以及见到如母亲般的妇女,应安住于如母亲之想,以及见到如姐妹般的妇女,应安住于如姐妹之想,以及见到如女儿般的妇女,应现前安住于如女儿之想。乞食的比丘不应执取街道和市场,以及十字路口,以及三岔路口,以及屠宰场等的相。去到家门口后,摇动铁环,然后轻轻地、缓慢地敲门。如果妇女睡着了,应摇动门环让她醒来。如果进入舂米的地方,应在舂米杵舂两三次之间停留。如果进入燃烧的地方,应在烧完一捆柴火之前停留。如果进入磨坊,应在转两三次之间停留。应以忆念安住,以及心不散乱地接受乞食。接受多少为满足,就接受多少。如果想要乞食,应在僧团中食用。如果被邀请,也应接受。乞食的行为是:他应该舍弃。这被称为乞食的行为。什么是取食的行为呢?取食的比丘应知道时间,然后乞食。应了知。应现前安住忆念。应心不散乱。不应扰乱。不应混杂。无论如何都应端庄且寂静。无论如何都应不净。

One should respectfully receive alms. One should receive thoroughly. It should not be equal to too much. It should not be equal to too little. One should receive with mindfulness, and with mindfulness dwelling, and with mind not distracted, and without negligence, and with as much as one is satisfied, one should receive that much. This is called the act of begging for alms. What is the act of practicing alms? A monk practicing alms should enter with mindfulness. Stand with mindfulness. Dwell with mindfulness, and with mind not distracted, and with dignity and steady conduct, and with great restraint, and with great concealment, and without making noise, and with eyes not wandering, and looking at the length of the yoke, and with senses subdued, and with mind not outwardly scattered, and with thoughts of before and after, and seeing a woman like a mother, one should dwell on the thought of a mother, and seeing a woman like a sister, one should dwell on the thought of a sister, and seeing a woman like a daughter, one should presently dwell on the thought of a daughter. A monk practicing alms should not grasp the signs of streets and markets, and crossroads, and three-way intersections, and slaughterhouses, etc. After going to the door of a house, shake the iron ring, and then gently and slowly knock on the door. If a woman is asleep, one should shake the door ring to wake her up. If one enters a place where rice is being pounded, one should stay until the pestle has pounded two or three times. If one enters a place where burning is taking place, one should stay until one bundle of firewood has been burned. If one enters a mill, one should stay until it has turned two or three times. One should receive alms with mindfulness dwelling, and with mind not distracted. Receive as much as one is satisfied with. If one wants to practice alms, one should eat in the sangha. If one is invited, one should also accept. The act of begging for alms is: he should abandon. This is called the act of practicing alms. What is the act of taking food? A monk taking food should know the time and then beg for alms. One should know. One should presently dwell on mindfulness. One should not distract the mind. One should not disturb. One should not mix. In any case, one should be dignified and quiet. In any case, one should be impure.
