However, one should observe and speak with mindfulness. One should not be arrogant. One should speak of the Dharma from time to time. One should refrain from non-conduct and establish oneself in conduct. They should also listen to and follow the words of his exhortation and instruction. This is called the conduct of an elder monk on the outskirts of a village. What is the conduct of one who comes suddenly? A monk who comes suddenly should not enter the monastery abruptly. He should place his alms bowl and robes at the entrance of the monastery. If there is water, he should wash his feet. If there is no water, he should wipe off the dust with a dust cloth, leaves, or old leaves. If he needs to urinate or defecate, he should do so. Then, after putting on his robes, he should carry the fastening of his robes and the container for his alms bowl on his left shoulder, hold a rinsing liquid in his right hand, and carry his shoes in his left hand. If the monastery is surrounded by a wall, a wooden fence, or a moat, he should knowingly enter without dragging at the gate. He should circumambulate the stupas. Knowingly, he should maintain mindfulness, without a distracted mind, observe a distance of about a yoke, enter the temple, and enter in the direction of ample light. If the monks residing in the temple see him, they will think, "This monk has come suddenly." This becomes the conduct of a monk resting. After a monk who has come suddenly enters the temple, he should place the fastening of his robes, the container for his alms bowl, pills, and leftovers in an appropriate place. Then, he should respectfully honor the elder monks, and with reverence, prostrate at their feet. He should please the new monks with pleasant words. He should sit on whatever seat he obtains. Whether it is at the time of eating, drinking soup, or prostrating, if the door is knocked or the ghanta is struck, the monk who has come suddenly should gather in the assembly hall of the Sangha. He should ask about the number of years of ordination and sit down according to the order in which he is placed. If he is moving his residence, he should examine it carefully before accepting it. If a dwelling is assigned, he should ask whether he will stay here.
