Seeking valuable cloth should be obtained from the householder or his wife. Obtaining it from others constitutes a minor offense. Here, the emphasis is on possession, not seeking. Therefore, the act of seeking and possessing should be considered the cause of downfall. Merely seeking or merely possessing is not. Similarly, in the Vinaya-vibhanga, it is said that if a monk hastily seeks or privately possesses for a long time, then it should all be abandoned. By saying "all," it is indicated that seeking and possessing together are the cause of downfall, not separate actions. This is indeed the case, otherwise, it would lead to committing thirty-one Nissaggiya Pacittiya offenses and losing thirty precepts. For things that have been dedicated, only converting the gains of clothing leads to Nissaggiya Pacittiya, as stated in the Vinaya-vibhanga and the Questions. Other than that, it is a minor offense. Some argue that converting personal gains also leads to Nissaggiya Pacittiya, which is unreasonable. Because the sutras and the Vinaya-vibhanga state that if it is converted to the Sangha's gains, then it is the Sangha of the Buddha's Sravakas. If someone says this is an example, it is not, because in the description of a monk converting the Sangha's gains to his own and changing the name, etc., and the description of the downfall, everything is based on the Sangha. Furthermore, some say that this is not a branch, which is unreasonable, because the Questions state that if it is sent through a messenger, it is a minor offense. Someone asks, why is there no Parajika offense here? Some say it is because there is no intention to steal. Others say it is because it is to be distributed among many monks, and the value is insufficient. Still others say it is because it was not actually offered, so it was not possessed. Regarding accumulation, the seven-day medicine should be blessed with the seven-day mantra and consumed before the end of the seven days. If consumed on the eighth day, then it will lead to a Nissaggiya Pacittiya offense. Consuming refers to possessing. Therefore, fully consuming refers to possessing, not eating. Because eating cannot lead to a Nissaggiya Pacittiya offense. These are blessed for the sick.

If asked, what are the benefits of consecrated substances? The answer is that for things that have not been blessed, one can receive them again and again, enjoy them within the limits of one's own body, enjoy them in advance, and also make them exceed the limits of one's own body. This is the benefit. Because it is said (in the scriptures): One should enjoy stored things. Consecration is also only for the three medicines; it is not permissible for food at the proper time, because there is no result. If consecration is done to avoid the fault of storing, and if food at the proper time is consecrated, then exceeding the time for eating becomes storage, so it is not taught to consecrate it. Some say that only those who have not taken full ordination should wash with water. In some sutras, such a statement of becoming sugar is not seen, but in general, what a monk does lawfully is already done. Wine should not be drunk, because it is prohibited by the Vinaya and customs, and because it relies on unlawful aspects. This can be understood through the Compendium of the Vinaya. Some think that, like jaggery, honey should not be eaten at the wrong time, etc. Because the sutra says that a monkey offered honey sprinkled with cold water, and the Buddha accepted it, this was to avoid being devoured by demons and to enjoy it only at the wrong time. If honey is eaten at the proper time, it does not accord with the reason of wind. This statement is unreasonable, because there is no such word of self-nature as "enjoying at the wrong time." Enjoying honey is not at the wrong time, but it is possible to eliminate phlegm and to increase the monkey's joy. It is also possible to enjoy it at the wrong time after filtering it. Therefore, it should be said that, like jaggery, honey should not be enjoyed at the wrong time. In short, seven-day medicine is an expiation for abandoning storage. For things that can be eaten within a specified time and for life, it is a misdeed. For unlawful things such as abandoning storage and not receiving consecration, one should abandon them to a novice with an attitude of disregard.
