Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra: Generating Joy Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra: Generating Joy Herein is the Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra: Generating Joy through Words. It is because there is a statement of offering attachment and so forth to others. Furthermore, some, when offering the precepts in front, additionally recite the words of a mute, thinking that it should be stated as not offered, but that is also unreasonable. Even if there is no understanding, if there is realization, it is offered, just as with the fault of dying and so forth. If the tongue is recovered, there will be understanding. "Offering the precepts" means directly telling others, "I am giving up the precepts." "Having abandoned the precepts" means saying, "Practicing celibacy is difficult, dwelling in solitude is difficult," and so forth, expressing that one is unable to uphold the precepts. Therefore, if one abandons the precepts without confessing, it is not a complete offering because the cause is not reiterated. Furthermore, if one states that one has offered without any abandonment, that is also not complete because the result is not stated. Therefore, that which lacks both is complete, so both should be closely regarded. It should be understood that this is for the purpose of fully expressing the meaning of language. "Offered the precepts but did not abandon them," and so forth. Since there are four possibilities for offering the precepts, the meaning of not abandoning after offering the precepts should be regarded as distinct. Even if the meaning is distinct, this will still be accomplished, namely, some have abandoned the precepts but have not offered them. If, due to carelessness, one engages in any of the four defeatable offenses, it is as if one has offered them, and thus it is established as the property of a renunciate and a fully ordained monk, so it is explained. For offering, it is also necessary to express emptiness here, but not through a distinction of words. Words actually cause others to understand, and if there is no distinction, all vows will be offered. If there is a distinction, it should be known that only that is offered, and not the others. Here, mantras are not necessary because merely giving up is the main thing. If it is asked: Is the rite of giving up done relying on others, or relying on others?
